Cans or jars. If your grocer doesn’t have them, they most likely don’t stock bread, potatoes, or People magazine either.
Salmon flavored whipped Philadelphia cream cheese.
That’s gone? I could have sworn I’ve seen it at the fountain not that long ago.
Sounds like the much lamented Aztec Bar.
Orange flavored Tang was great (I took it in my thermos in first grade - ah, lovely Ms. Emert), the grape wasn’t anywhere near as good.
Not a food, but . . . I miss those thick glass bottles that soft drinks used to be bottled in. They held a chill better than plastic, and, well, just seemed to make drinks taste better. Probably psychological, but nonetheless.
I know you can still buy six packs of Coca Cola in the bottle, but they cost a fortune.
I only see it when I go south. Around these parts, it just can’t be had. I have no idea why. A lot of people here have never even heard of it.
We serve it down here at Waffle House. Conversations frequently go like this: “I’d like a Dr Pepper.” “We have Mr Pibb.” “Give me a Coke.”
And where is that?
Googling around on this, I found that Coca Cola really pushed it into the Dr. Pepper market, namely the south, and especially in Texas. But at one point they had big time East Coast distribution. When I lived in NY in the 70s, it was always a beverage option. But I have never seen the stuff in MA. Not once.
I miss the fries made at the Crystal Beach snack stand at White Lake, NC. You’d go up to the guy, ask for fries, and he’d reach into a bag and pull out a potato. That’s right, the potato stayed a potato until after you ordered fries. Only then would it become french fries. Fried up right then and there in front of you.
If you did, chances are it was Mr. Pibb Xtra or Xcel or Xxon Valdez or whatthehellever it morphed into to “improve” it.
Ha ha, you’re so funny.
If they were in my grocery store I’d have bought them, thanks. I guess I should curse myself for not living in South Carolina.
Mr. Pibb is all over the Ogdamn place here. I’m not much of a pop drinker anymore, but I don’t mind it in place of Dr. Pepper sometimes.
Now the only thing I haven’t seen mentioned here or anywhere, and I’m beginning to think I dreamed it up…Aspen. Apple flavored pop. Anybody remember that? I seem to recall getting a can of it delivered to my door from some promotion or something. I loved it, but something tells me that the memory of it is enough, because if it rears it’s ugly head again, and I taste it with adult taste buds, it’ll put me off of it real quick!
PB Max! They stopped making those when I was in high school, and my mouth still waters whenever I think about them. They used real peanut butter, not the crumbly textured, overly sweetened stuff you find in a Reese’s Cup. Best candy bar ever made.
I miss my mom’s cooking, particularly corned beef, spaghetti+sausage, and tuna helper.
I don’t remember it, but it apparently existed – there’s an online petition drive to bring it back.
I discovered Pasta Anytime meals shortly after moving to Indiana in 2001, but they were only on local grocery shelves for a couple of years. The dinners were apparently still available in some areas as recently as last year, but it’s telling that the Kraft Foods site’s link to the relevant page is dead.
McDonald’s Cheddar Melt. Perhaps it’s not as good as I remember it being, but it was oh-so-exciting when they’d bring it back every so often in their limited-time-only! promotions.
Don’t bother with the fizzies, QtM, Hakuna’s right, they’re awful. My brother and I were so excited when we found them among ‘nostalgia candy’ at a gift store just a couple of months ago. We plopped 'em in ice cold water, had a ceremonial fizzies toast, clinked glasses and …man, oh man, bleaah! Weak ersatz root beer flavored alka-seltzer. Not at all what either of us remembered.
You can’t go home again, QtM.
Funny that you say that, because I just got Mr. Pibb from the fountain at Baja Fresh in Stoneham, MA today!
Lemon Coolers!!
I haven’t thought of those in years…I could eat a whole box and have powdered sugar all over my fingers and clothing.
I really miss the old Coca-Cola that used to be flavored with cane sugar rather than HFCS. They have bottles of the “real stuff” in the Hispanic markets, I guess they get it from Mexico?? I will have to try it sometime but it is like $3.00 a bottle.
I also miss the creamy italian salad dressing they used to have at all the Pizza Hut restaurants. When is the last time any of you had a sit down dinner at a Pizza Hut?? We used to go there all the time when I was a kid, and their salad bar was great. Our fave combination was Thin N Crispy pork sausage pizza with a pitcher of Dr. Pepper!! It doesn’t get any better than that!
