Foods with darn-near universal appeal

Moderators: Please close this thread. It’s obviously derailed to the point where it won’t be back on track, and I’ve found that I no longer care anyway.*

*edited to add: I care about being understood, which is why I keep trying to explain. But I find I no longer care about the answer, or at least any answer this group could come up with.

Opal: Sorry to disagree, but this thread has taken on an interesting life of its own, and I see no reason to close it. I don’t see that it’s derailed so much as taken interesting definitional side-tracks (perhaps slight “hijacks” but not so far off course as all that.)

Fish, chips and mushy peas.

Eggs, chips and beans

Chicken Rogan Josh with Pilau Rice
Beat them if ya can

Warning noted, Dex. Sorry about that.

Pie and chips!

Indeedy…or pudden’ 'n chips

Haggis. Everybody loves haggis, even vegetarians.

I think ye’ve had a tad overmuch of the Dewar’s, laddie

You gotta be kidding!!

Had it once, it tasted like wet sawdust smells

I have heard that some wrong minded folk don’t like mushy peas. The freaks.

I have met only one person in my life who didn’t like honey. And that was in comb form.

I don’t like chocolate and I don’t like chocolate chip cookies. Never have. Plus they violate the OP’s rules anyway since they have dairy in them. I know she mentioned vegan cookies, but vegan cookies taste like ass and lose their appeal.

If there is an answer to the question, it’s rice. That’s the most commonly eaten food in the world. That’s not a sexy answer but it’s an accurate one. It’s a staple in much of the world, it has a bland flavor and while it might not be exciting, few people would say they dislike it.

Other than that – bread.

Continuing in my threat to be a downer, I don’t like honey, despite being a sugar addict.

And I hate coconut, spicy (capsaicin-laden) food, and veggie burgers (and everything else soy- or tofu- based, though I like soybeans themselves).

I am familiar with the words, but they make no sense together. Why would you eat peas (especially mushy ones) with perfectly good fish and chips? Do you mix the eggs, chips, and beans together?

As I stated upthread, I dislike it. I only eat it when the flavor is sufficiently disguised.

On the upside, I can support both the pizza and bread suggestions.

Almonds and cashews.

I grew up not knowing what rice tasted like because my father was such a picky eater that he would only eat rice if it had sugar and cinnamon in it, and that only rarely.

I was probably 10 before I ever had plain rice. Maybe older.

So, I’ve only got one datapoint for “hates rice.” And even he liked it later in his life!

Oh, and to address other foodstuffs: I’m pretty rare in that I don’t like bacon, peanut butter, or honey. I’ve met very very few people who join me in those dislikes, so I’m thinking that it’s rare.

I wonder if the best answer is actually one of the simplest: Sugar.

It’s a food since it has calories and can be eaten straight up. Some people may not have as much of a sweet tooth as others, but does anyone actually dislike “sweet”?

I don’t like rice, either. The texture is off-putting, to put it mildly.

Pasta, on the other hand? I could eat that for two meals a day, every day. Who doesn’t like pasta?

Has anyone mentioned potato chips?

I mean, you don’t have to love them, but I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like them, unless it would screw up their dental work or something.

You might be onto something. I think most everybody likes some kind of pasta, be it noodles, dumplings, whatever.

I don’t like rice or honey.

I second (or third) pasta. I think it’s similar enough, whether it’s spaghetti or Thai noodles (the pasta itself, obviously, not the sauce) that it counts as one food, and it’s versatile enough to appeal to different tastes and dietary issues.

Pasta. That’s the ticket.

People who keep kosher or observe halal do not eat pork, along with vegetarians and people who just skeeve pork. No way bacon is anywhere near a universal food.

Lots of people are allergic to peanuts, even fatally so. Don’t see how that could qualify.

Don’t know how anyone could not like honey, but hey, there seems to be an objection to everything.

Maybe “noodles” is the most commonly enjoyed food, if you count all different kinds of noodles, not just wheat-based ones like Italian pasta, but also including rice noodles. This could encompass dumplings, ravioli, potstickers, pierogies, as well as pad thai, ramen, egg noodles, mac n’ cheese, spaghetti… Is there anyone who doesn’t like at least one of these things?
