Well, I think he’d have to be addled to adulterate his maple syrup, so I think it fits
.
According to the current chatter in the Polls discussion thread, you can add vanilla ice cream to my list.
Although if you look at the poll, vanilla is pretty popular.
Do they work in an Osso Buco? Cuz that seems like it would be good!
Oh, absolutely. I’m both too cheap and these days a little squeamish about using veal, so in the one time a year or so I make osso buco, I use shanks and it works fine. Along with some nice risotto milanese and gremolata.
Addled is perfectly cromulent for this situation, as it is derived from the old english word meaning ‘filth’ or ‘mud’. It was also used to describe diarrhea.
I don’t think White Castle burgers have been mentioned yet. By any conventional measure they have to be considered far inferior to ‘real’ hamburgers, but there’s something about the carmelized onions, and the way they cook the burger and bun together so the bun soaks up the burger grease, that makes them ridiculously addictive.
Fortunately I don’t have a White Castle too close to where I live, so I only indulge once or twice a year, buying a 6-pack of them at a time. Has to be the burger, not the cheeseburger. Other burgers are better with cheese, but somehow cheese detracts from the White Castle experience.
Oh, I almost completely agree with you on White Castle except that they must be cheesed for me, specifically the jalapeno cheese. I go through different types of food phases throughout the year, and there was one week that I ate three jalapeno sliders for breakfast every day after dropping my kid off to school (there was a White Castle about a half mile away on the route back.)
They’re best not thought of as hamburgers in the conventional sense. But if you love onions – and I adore onions – there’s something about their rehydrated chopped onions that concentrates that allioid flavor into its quintessence. Just try not to be around others in an enclosed space a few hours later.
Hmmm…interesting. I will definitely rethink my ‘no cheese on White Castle burgers’ policy now, and try at least a couple with jalapeno cheese next time I make a WC run, thanks.
Partly for me it is that cheese + onion combo. I know there are people who just simply don’t like cheese on their burgers, but gooey cheese with soft onions are my favorite. That’s why I like Big Babies out here in my part of Chicago. (Just an average double cheeseburger with one slice of American cheese in between the patties and a pile of well-griddled onions on them. Oh, and ketchup, mustard, pickle, sesame seed bun. No rabbit food. Something about that one slice of cheap-o American cheese just ties everything together.)
I’ve never had one where the rehydrated onions were caramelized. That would almost elevate it into the realm of gourmet food.
The relative of candy corn with the pumpkins and chocolate.
There.
Oh, i love mello-creme pumpkins.
Well, I admit ‘carmelized’ wasn’t the right term, but there’s something about those onions that really gives the burgers their great, unique White Castle flavor. Pulykamell probably says it best:
You’ve perfectly described Jack In The Box “tacos.”
Come to think of it, that’s a good contribution to this thread for me. Those things are weird, greasy .. and since moving to western Michigan I miss them.
(Nearest JITB is 100+ miles from me. I don’t miss them THAT much.)
Yeah, not tacos unless you use air quotes but still weirdly tasty.
One of my ex-bf’s absolute favorite post-drinking foods was Jack-in-the-Box tacos.
Apparently all of your chestnuts are belong to me, or so say the participants in a recent MMP. I love them. I’m eating a homemade castagnaccio (chestnut bread) at this very moment. Next week, my mother will make a chestnut stuffing for the turkey. I roast them in the winter. In other seasons, I snack on the packaged ones. When I’m in northern Spain, I buy chestnut honey. In fact, I always visit a store in Santiago de Compostela that sells only chestnut products. The woman who owns it recognizes and hugs me because every year I come in, and I bring other people in to try samples.
- Chestnuts–yum!
- Chestnuts–it depends/sometimes
- Chestnuts–blecch!
Oh, hells yes. I especially like Irish oats savory (seasoned with thyme and a bit of salt and topped with a fried egg). I only keep rolled oats around for cookies.
I used to like Dennison’s canned chili as a guilty pleasure from my childhood. Not so much these days.
The much reviled PB & mayo sandwich.
Missed an option: never had one.
