For all you guys coping with freezing snows about now...

Leave Surfers Paradise on Wednesday. Temperature is 27 degrees at 11.30am. Arrive in Melbourne where the temperature is INSANE. Yesterday drive the 6 hours from Melbourne to Mildura where the temperature is INSANER, and the highway was particularly sticky in places. The aircon was on in the house courtesy of a neighbour who also brought my 17 year old cat inside and locked him in and the temperature inside the house is still 31 degrees. The forecast for the next week: today to get to 44 (currently 42), then 44, 43, 42, 39, 41, 42 and again, 42. With rolling blackouts because some unfortunate drove into a power pole 2 days ago and the aged homes in Red Cliffs are still without airconditioning. Thoroughly miserable weather with no rain in sight.

Congratulations to me for ending up with a touch of heat.

No work today. Lying on the floor of the loungeroom under the aircon and a fan, sleeping, drinking water, drinking water and sleeping. And getting up to pee a lot, but it’s hot in the toilet so I try to avoid it if I can. Luckily the headache’s passed, my tummy’s settled (still tender, but not roiling) and my thinking has cleared, so I think I’m past the worst of it.

I’m mostly worried about my husband, though. It’s a $50 taxi ride to work from home or vice versa for him. But he’s having an anaemia attack again, so he’s really weak and REALLY feeling the heat. I’ve had to call my grandparents to pick him up from the train station that’s only 5 minutes walk away from our house, because he’s too weak to walk even that short distance in this heat.

And it’s supposed to be going on like this well into next week.

SI, what suburb are you in, again? I know you’re in the suburbs but I have a feeling you said it was out Parafield way (which is a good half-hour or more from me out here in the borderline rural zone) and therefore too far to offer taxi assistance.

However, if I’m mistaken and you’re more Munno Para-ish, I may be able to offer emergency back-up for the picking-up-in-the-evening thing while the heat wave’s on.

And Brisbane a cool 90 degrees with 89% humidity!

Well, I got lots of practice putting up subcut fluids today.

SI - can’t help you but would if I could. Your husband can’t be out in this. I almost passed out just crossing the road.

My 24yr old kid ended up in hospital with heatstroke yesterday afternoon/evening. Silly bugger had been cruising around doing stuff during the day, not drinking enough fluids of course, then got on a tram and promptly fainted, cracking his head a bewdy on the way down.

Some IV fluids and obs for 8 hours and he’s OK now, but suitably warned about the virtues of keeping out of the heat and keeping your body hydrated.

And maybe this will help.

Did I hear right on the radio today that Scamander experienced it’s record temp today of 42?

What is “snow”??

If it’s that hot just plain, then I’ll take it any day. If there is any significant amount of humidity involved, then I’ll stay here with my couple feet of snow, poorly plowed sidewalks and roads, and wind chills that knock 20 degrees off the actual temp, thanks.

I hate humidity when it’s hot.

Or any Florida summer day…

Viewing digital images from Adelaide showing temps on Gouger Street of 50C ( 122F ), and in one instance down on the tennis courts, an unbelievable 69.6C ( 157F).

It’s freakin’ hot here, and we’re in the northern hemisphere!

80 degree (F) highs all week. :frowning:

We were at Parafield, we’ve just moved to Elizabeth North (Womma) actually  Just bought a house.

Yesterday got even better. As hubby was on the train home from work I had a horrible feeling and checked the Adelaide Metro website.

Yep. Gawler line trains are now terminating at Salisbury, and all services between Salisbury and Gawler have been replaced by buses. It looks like there was a buckle on our line too. So there was a mad call to Grandma & Grandpa (who were sat at Womma train station), to get them to zip on down to Salisbury to rescue him.

I can’t blame Rann for the heat, but I can damned well blame the asshole for not putting more money into ensuring our rail system is a little more heatproofed than it is. All of the rails have had the expansion joints taken out and welded joints put in, because “It was too noisy”. Fuck the noise. I’d rather have a noisy ride that doesn’t render the rails inoperational on any day over 35 degrees than this bullshit.

That’s got to be reading localized surface temperature or something, not shaded free air temperature. I hope.

What a coincidence. I’m in the Northern Hemisphere, too. Howdy, neighbor!

Hey, congratulations!

I live within travel distance of Womma if you need assistance. I’ll PM you details.

I love summers in Mississippi now. It gets to about 100 degrees in the summer: my office is so cold that around 2pm every day I step out to the front porch and just sit. There’s one spot on the porch where I can scoot the bench right over into my favorite sunbeam, and I usually end up napping for 45 minutes or so. I can only do that if the temperatures are over 90 degrees. Right now, we’re at a cool 67 degrees.

It’s snowing heavily here in southern England (where it never snows!) at the moment. And I love it!
