For Dopers who have lived in or been to Saudi: Fast Food Restaurants

I am doing research for a short project about right wing movements in Saudi Arabia. Several of my sources mention the extreme irritation of particularly puritanical Muslims with the presence of American fast food chains and brand name products (e.g. Coca-Cola, Kelloggs Corn Flakes) on the Arabian market. I was curious: for anybody who entered a McDonalds or KFC or the like, did you ever see any protesters or disapproving looks from the natives? Did you ever see guards in an American (or western) chain?

Do you see many Arabs in western style clothing (I know they’ll still keep their heads covered, but do you see blue jeans, T shirts, etc.).

What were the most noticeable differences in McD’s, KFC, etc., over there from the ones here (other than the Arabic of course [speaking of which, do they have signage in English or any other Latin alphabet languages in addition to the Arabic?)

Also, very stupid question I’m sure but I’ll ask it anyway- does Saudi Arabia have supermarkets comparable to the ones here?

Thanks for any info. (This is more personal curiosity than research for the article I’m writing.)
