For fans of the Fletch books

A new Fletch movie is in the works, produced and starring Jon Hamm. It will be based on the second book, Confess Fletch, which means we might get introduced to Gregory McDonald’s other great character Francis Xavier Flynn(NN13).

Those two Chevy Chase abominations can rot in hell as far as I’m concerned.

What? And I used to consider you a person on a message board I read.

:frowning:

Ever read the books?

Sadly, I have not. But let me ask you this, is the name “John Coctostan” in the books?

I have. Even the trailers for the Chevy Chase versions made me sick.

Huh, I’ve always heard positivity about the Fletch movies, especially the first one. I have not read the books, but one of my friends has and liked the Chevy Chase movies.

Do you mean “John Coxtolstoy”? Not as far as I can remember.

No, I mean “John Coctostan” That’s why before, I put “John Coctostan” in my post

No, I don’t recall seeing that name in the book or hearing it in the movie.

Definitely in the movie. And now the name of a menu item at Moe’s Southwest Grill.

So, you didn’t like the movies on their own, or because they didn’t follow the books?

When I heard it in the movie, it sounded like John “Coxtolstoy”.
The movies were opportunities for Chase to mug, and his character did not remind me of I.M. Fletcher at all.

Fair enough. I liked the “mugging” I enjoy characters who are bitter and sarcastic, even in the face of danger.

That is why I titled this thread “For fans of the Fletch books”.

Well, on one hand I would say you mentioned the movies in your OP

On the other hand I would say I should learn to read thread titles.

I’m not going to tell you what I’m doing with my third hand.

I read Fletch Too and saw the movies. Different things altogether. Chevy Chase doesn’t get any better than in the Fletch movies, which is quite sad because they weren’t very good.

I am absolutely a fan of the Fletch books and those shitgarbage movies need flushing. Jon Hamm is a much closer match to the character, being, y’know, good looking. OMG, who should play Flynn? I’m all aflutter.

BTW, McDonald also wrote a slew of non-Fletch/Flynn books which are criminally unknown. Such a highly underrated writer.

Did you read any of the “Flynn” books?

Whereas I, you see, like the books and the movies. No, they weren’t all that faithful, but I don’t care. I like watching Chevy be Chevy. Is it Art? Fuck no. But it entertains me on a Saturday afternoon

Nope, just the one book. That was a long time ago, I remember I liked it, and wanted to find the first Fletch book but a lot of life has passed twixt then and now without it ever coming up again until today.

They should have cast Tommy Lee Jones back in 1985.
