'Bout freaking time! No court ruling, no overturned law. Just some people doing what is right. Let’s hope the Assembly feels the same way.
I hope the assembly does. I didn’t expect it to pass the senate, after I had listened to the debate when it was originally in the assembly, and it failed by so narrow a margin. I hope that the cowards who didn’t vote in the assembly the first time, allowing it to fail, do so now.
I salute them. It’s high time we quit persecuting the gays for their God-given sexuality.
:applause:
Hooray!
Oh, and I loved Tom McClintock’s disparagement of my marriage by saying that “marriage is formed for a fundamental purpose- to bring a new life into the world.”
Wonder when he’s going to introduce a bill prohibiting any couple that’s not already pregnant from getting married?
Would this have to be signed by the Governor? Is he likely to sign it into law?
Our gov’t is just like the Feds. If it is passed by both houses, the Gov has to sign it. He can veto and the veto can be overridden.
It probably won’t pass the lower house but if it does, the Gov will probably sign it. No way it gets overridden if the Gov vetos.
Damn those activist [del]Judges[/del] representatives.
Honestly. It’s as if they think that can just rewrite the laws whenever they feel like it!

Interestingly enough, our assemblyman (Mike Gordon of District 53) died unexpectedly a few months ago, so we are temporarily without representation in the Assembly. What makes it even more interesting is that I just turned 18, so the special election for his position is the first one that I’ll be able to participate in.
Moving thread from IMHO to MPSIMS.
About freakin’ time!
There’s a governing body I can respect
I think I’m going to spend a few minutes today writing a letter, pop it off to some of the assemblymen of California. “I’m not a resident of your state, but I just want to let you know I whole-heartedly applaud what you’re doing…”
Or banning anyone who is sterile from ever getting married.
Fundamental misunderstanding. When judges create law, it is activist.
When legislators create law, it is a proper exercise of their office.
The legislature creates the law. The judges interpret it.
Bricker, I think you may just have been mildly whooshed. The way I saw Scott Plaid’s comment was this:
- Opponents of SSM complained about “activist judges” when the MA SJC ruled that SSM could not be forbidden under the state constitution, saying that such laws MUST be passed by legislature as the “will of the people.”
- This law was passed by the legislature (Well, by part of it).
- In one of the articles above (don’t remember which one) one of the opponents was cited as saying (paraphrased): “The people will be upset to learn that the legislature defied their votes in 2000, this is not their will.”
- WTF?
I dunno, that’s the way I saw it. More of a comment on the cognitive dissonance one may experience upon seeing those two arguments next to each other.
Er, by the way… WTFG California senate!
Um, with the exceptions of:
Dennis Hollingsworth, because he’s a patronizing dick:
And also because he’s a moron:
Tom McClintock, because he’s obstinately short-sighted:
Uh, nope…
And because he’s a dick:
Uh, and a moron.
But for the rest of them… pats on the back all round! I disagree with the positions of those who voted no, but there are no outstanding quotes calling attention to any more bone-headedness than usual on their respective parts, so they get the benefit of the doubt.
Cheers, California! Good luck in the Assembly.
Congrats California!
Even though I moved from there to Las Vegas, I still have a very high regard for the politics in that State - and this is just another example why.
And I wouldn’t be surprised if Arnold didn’t veto it and actually signed it into law. He has followed the party line about not supporting Gay marriage, but at the same time, he has left many a door open and I don’t think anyone could accuse him of being homophobic. He might not want to lead the parade, but I doubt he will go to any great lengths to stop it from happening either.
Will be interesting to see how this progresses.
My SO and I registered as domestic partners in West Hollywood years ago - it was mandatory in order to get health insurance for him when I was working for a film studio. We will be one of the first to drive over and get married there, once it becomes legal!
THE ASSEMBLY JUST PASSED THE BILL! Now, all that remains is to get Arnold’s signature, and gay marriage will be in California! Woohooo!!
Thank you, Jeeves.
The vote was 41-35.
OK, Arnie. Show us you have the stones to sign it.
Anyone else find it ironic that a governor in the “no activist judges” party is looking to the courts to settle the marriage question?
