We have three birds, a cockatiel, rosie bourke and a plain old yellow parakeet (with red eyes)…The cockatiel we have had for three years, ditto the parakeet and the bourke a little over a year…Suddenly this past week we see eggs in the bottom of the cage…They seem to be too big for the bourke and parakeet to have laid, which leaves “Jack” as the culprit. Now “Jacqueline?” Anyway, is it possible that these birds could have bred?? I will definitelyset up a bed for the eggs…right now they have fallen through the wires onto the paper…or is it normal for a bird to lay eggs just for the hell of it…
Nature finds a way.
Not sure about these species, but the eggs that you buy in the store are unfertilized. The chickens have been selected to lay eggs in large clutches and at regular intervals, but I guess it’s possible one of your birds could have laid some unfertilized eggs. Maybe someone who’s owned one of these species has experienced the same thing. I’ve never had birds myself.
Sure, one bird could have sex with another, but all of these species are too distinct to fertilize the eggs of another species. And female birds can lay eggs even if unstimulated by mating. You should keep the eggs for the hen (general term for a female bird that has laid eggs). They won’t hatch, but If you remove them, she may be stimulated to lay more. Let her sit on the eggs until the hormones have quit taking over and she loses interest in them. If you don’t want the eggs to putrefy, you can pierce the shells and blow out the contents, then return them to the hen. Or you can buy fake ceramic eggs at the pet store that she may accept. I would also separate her from the other two birds so they don’t bother her at this time. And make sure she has plenty of calcium, as the process of manufacturing eggs can deplete this from her body. Unrestricted access to her own cuttlebone should take care of this.
any of your birds could have laid eggs if they are female - they just won’t be fertilized. if she does it too much she could deplete her body of minerals but if it’s just now & then it doesn’t matter.
she might want to sit on them or she may not care.
