They both remained on vacation for days AFTER the worst natural disaster in American History struck. It’s obvious they don’t give a fuck about this country other than as a way of enriching themselves and their friends.
Bush appointed a FAKE horse lawyer to be the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency! It took a colossal fuckup of unprecedented proportions for the media to dig up this single proof of cronyism from Bush. It is doubtful that this is the only instance of unqualified people being appointed to positions of great responsibility in the administration. When you turn on a light and see one cockroach scurrying away, it’s a safe bet that there are dozens more hidden that you haven’t seen yet.
It should be obvious to any non koolaid drinking True Believer that Bush’s continued existence in office is a disgrace and a danger to the security of this country. I therefore call for the immediate resignation of Bush and Cheney. Let House Speaker Dennis Hastert run the country.
I say this not out of partisan conviction or simple hatred of Bush. I truly, honestly believe that if Bush stays in office that this country will be in serious peril. I welcome anyone to argue otherwise.
We’ve had crappy presidents in office before. We survived them. Hell, we survived Harding, for God’s sake, who admitted he had no idea what he was doing. We’ll survive this one.
This administration’s bungled response to Hurricane Katrina (a well-known and well-publicized threat that arrived after days of advance warning) demonstrates that they are woefully unprepared to respond to a major terrorist attack.
Since 9-11 this administration has claimed that they’ve made national security and the war on terror one of the government’s top priorities.
Those claims have now been demonstrated to be FALSE. This country is NOT prepared for a major terrorist attack. In fact, we’re LESS prepared than we were four years ago.
Allowing this administration to remain in power now endangers us all.
I agree. Put Hastert in charge. He can’t be any worse.
The “screwup” is largely the result of complete incompetence by Louisiana officials, who are in fact deliberately keeping national help at arm’s reach and away from New Orleans. More to the point, it is not and should not be the President’s job to coordinate disaster relief. He probably needed another director of FEMA, or the dismantle it totally, and I say that the National Department of Homeland Security is useless, but this is neither his fault nor his responsibility.
I’ve disagree with his positions all along on policy grounds. I thought he was leading in the country in the wrong direction. But I didn’t think he was DANGEROUS.
For example, I thought invading Iraq was bad policy. I thought it would destabilize the region and work against American interests in the long run. But I assumed the invasion would be carried out with adequate troops and adequate preparation for the nation-building that would follow.
How deluded I was.
And that’s when this administration really started to worry me. It’s not Bush’s policy that scares me, it’s his inability to execute.
As I’ve said in other threads about Katrina, before the storm made landfall I assumed that Katrina would be a political windfall for Bush. All FEMA had to do was perform adequately. Bush could have his photo ops and get his bump in the polls and for a few weeks (or months) Cindy Sheehan and Valerie Plame would vanish from the front page of the newspaper.
How deluded I was.
I live in Los Angeles. We’re a prime target for a terrorist attack as well as a major earthquake. The Bush Administration has just demonstrated that despite what they’ve said for the last four years, they are not capable of responding to either of those occurances. Next time it could be me and my kids sitting at the Superdome, waiting for the buses that never come.
It’s not the politics. It’s the incompetence.
Bricker, given what you’ve seen over the last two weeks, do you have confidence that this country prepared for another major terrorist attack? If so, what concrete evidence do you have to demonstrate to me that my fears are unfounded?
The State of Louisiana was overwhelmed. The governor sent a letter to Bush dated August 28th begging for help. I’m not saying Governor Blanco is blameless here (perhaps she needs the boot also) but the Federal Government has a vastly greater amount of resources than any single state and President Bush is the leader of the Executive Branch of the Federal Government so their inaction is even more egregious.
His hires? Hell, didn’t he create the Department of Homeland Security? How the hell is the total failure of the DHS to respond in a timely or useful fashion not Bush’s “fault [or] responsibilty,” smiling bandit?
