Feb 29th comes around almost every 4 years. However years that end in “00” are not leap years unless they also are divisible by 400 - so 1800 and 1900 were not leap years, while 2000 was.
I joined in September 2001, but there is no way that was 16 years ago, I must have passed through some kinda time portal or something…
No way I tell you.
(damn, I’m old)
Huh, there you go. And I’ve even been here longer than you.
Lurking since late 90’s, originally with a different username that I’ve long forgotten; reenlisted as TC in October 2008.
And don’t call me a “geezer”! I’m 67, and by god I’ll wear a red blazer to your funeral and dance on your grave.
It’s the exception to the exception to the exception. I guess the rule is well-proved!
Been here since 1999, before that it was the a.f.c-a usenet group. My thought about a web-based message system was that it’s a stupid way to manage messages, since that’s exactly what usenet worked perfectly for. Why do we need this newfangled web thingy?
I joined in May, 2000. I have visited almost every day since. My experience of both the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the election of President Obama took place primarily on this board. I remember when the board went to pay, I started signing up years in advance, and wondering if we would even still be around in far-off dates like 2017. I am currently subscribed until 2021. On the internet, this is my home.
2001 for me. Being a fan of the books, I would have joined earlier had I known it existed (even had an AOL account at the time).
Same here.
My thought too, until they let the riffraff in and the volume on interesting Usenet groups got too high. We’re more exclusive here.
Hello there verbal doppelganger! Believe me, if they put us side-by-side in white Miami-style business suits, they’d tell us apart quickly, and permanently.
When the show was on cable TV (A&E?), I would have signed up for the AOL pages in a heartbeat, had I known about them. Oh, that and as a starving college student, I couldn’t swing the AOL fees.
Tripler
I’ll be the short bald one from Jersey.
6/21/2000 according to my profile page. I think I lurked for a good while before that.
Nope, he is/was staff. I have never been any sort of staff. Check with Tuba or C Dex. this has come up before . I am the oldest continuous member who never left or held any position when this board was started as they left AOL.
You go dude!
14 years here. Not quite a geezer, but close.
Followed the Master since the mid-eighties. My wife and I read his books to each other on long trips (before discovering books on tape). I got curious at work and typed “straightdope.com” into the url bar to see what would happen. Lurked a bit and joined in late 2003. It was my first “online” presence.
April of 2000. Just barely 60 years old then, now just barely alive. Maybe just barely sentient.
Yup my join date starts with a one. I’m old.
I remember when we were on the AOL Watercooler. I don’t think I signed up here on the forum at first because I was intimidated by all the brainiacs.
I’m one of the oldies too. Joined in 1999, user number 157; so I have that going for me too.
Came here from alt.fan.cecil-adams.

You whippersnappers get off my lawn!
