There is probably one in your closet right now. Don’t look, they are more scared of you than you are of them and generally harmless.
Doubt if anyone remembers me. But Hi everybody!
I remember you, meek. Nice to have you back!

And I’ve been nice since I came here, dammit.
I’m also a certified geezette on the verge of grandmotherhood.
Huh.
[wailing] But I don’t wanna be a geezer!![/wailing]
Missed being a '99er by 3 days. Never read Cecil’s columns in a newspaper because the alternative paper in Portland doesn’t carry it. Saw references to Cecil on Usenet and then found his books. Don’t really remember how I came across this message board, but I know I lurked for a few months before joining.
Think I’ll go play on a '99er’s yard…
Hi! Inherited anything lately?
These threads are the only time I actually post.
Finally after dozens of password attempts, I finally figured out what my old password was.
So I am officially an old Geezer and not just pretending to be one.
Here I be.
99er reporting in.
I used to get Cecil Adam’s books all the time at the library. After Nebraska football, Straight Dope was probably the third thing I looked up when I discovered the World Wide Web.
“If ignorance was corn flakes, you’d be General Mills.”
I joined in Aug 1999 and my membership number is 2027.
Living in the UK, I get a Pensioner’s bus pass and a Winter fuel allowance.
When I registered here, I had never heard of Cecil Adams or The Straight Dope. But I think we 99ers are still looked down upon by the few remaining AOL Star-Bellied Sneetches as Johnny-Come-Latelies.
We '97ers don’t taunt you post-AOLers all that often ![]()
Ahem…I prefer the title “codger.”
sigh Here.
Love reading but don’t have much to add.
I discovered the Straight Dope from the short-lived TV show. After that went off the air I read all of the books and started reading the new articles online. Joined up as member #173 when the boards opened in '99
It’s very serendipitous that I was just thinking about how long I’ve been on the SDMB when I stumbled upon this recent thread.
I guess I’m a latecomer, but I did participate on the AOL forum (with the same user name!). It wasn’t until activity was pretty much dead that I learnt about an actual website.
The AOL forum, of course, turned me onto the books. I’d suggest that this is a good medium for converting to book sales, but given the number of books, their profit margins, and the amount of time I’ve spent here, I can imagine that no one one breaking even!
Yeah, I’m here. March of 2000. Still married to Airman Doors and the sprog is now 15 and a smartass like his mother.
I went through some pix of the sprog’s birth and saw Simon, the little stuffed hippo that Max Torque lent for the occasion.
Almost exactly 17 years since you last posted. I salute you.
