I see nothing wrong with calling the OP on a statement that has no facts to back it up. She may wantprayer to be the reason she survived, but to state that there IS a god…and a god that intervened to save her life, at that…is silly.
I’m very happy that this women made a remarkable recovery. But I’m with Eve. I guess the Og man was too busy watching over her and not those that died in the Iran earthquake.
Hopefully, as they said in the article that she has a rare condition called “TENS – toxic epidermal necrosis” that could’ve caused the same reaction by a whole host of drugs. Now where was GOD at conception to prevent this “TENS”? I agree, this should go to GD. The article is very one-sided.

Just this woman?
(a) Not just her family, but one of the nurses as well. And there is no indication they attributed it only to prayer, except in the confines of your head.
(b) The OP says For this woman at least – clearly indicating the OP doesn’t assert everyone must agree – but you still have a problem with it, because God flipping forbid that someone attribute something to divinity when the ever so much better informed EVE thinks that could not possibly be the case.
© You have no reason to drop by and call it “ba-nanner oil” except to be – uncharacteristically – a cranky old biddy who has to make clear that she doesn’t agree with the sunshine currently being spread. A funny action to be undertaken by someone who presumably is all too familiar with those who would assert unwanted, unsupported, and meanspirited opinions about stuff they happen to disagree with or disapprove of. But then I guess “tolerance” only applies to stuff you approve of – right?
And I didn’t say I’d lose all respect for you, though do bear up, dear. It’s comforting in a way to discover you’re not perfect. It’s harder to reconcile such unattractive "Mrs. Grundy"ism with the glamorous persona of EVE, but I’m sure I in turn will bear that with fortitude.
[Bette Davis voice] “But I am a cranky old biddy, Blanche, I am!” [/Bette Davis voice]
Or to be accurate, ‘to put it on’.
Just bringing a little comic relief.
But I agree with Eve, it wasn’t the skin, it was the Prayer. If it was only the medical aspect, then I wouldn’t categorize it as miracle, but as a freak healing.
;j
Actually, one of the crack medical team also characterized the patient’s recovery as “a miracle” and saw in it a “divine hand.”
And what’s your point? Reeder does not misstate the facts here AFAICT. The article cited doesn’t leave much doubt that this woman believes there is a God and that her recovery is at least in part due to God’s intervention.
I’m not sure I understand what this means, but if it means something other than, “I fart in the general direction of the OP and blow my nose at people of faith for a bunch of ungrateful, superstitious assholes,” then it doesn’t seem to adequately cover the nature of your posts.
On preview, I see Jodi’s already done almost exactly this, but I spent time on the post and may as well add my voice, I figure. sigh

Good to see we’re all paying attention! OY!
LMAO!
Jodi…very well said again.
For comments brought in about “Iraq” and “conception” of the drug in the first place…c’mon - - can anyone stay ON TOPIC. Sheesh! LOL! That’s what frustrates ME.
Yogini
Ooops I meant “Iran” - doh!
Oh, fercrissakes! Give the old bidd-- er – Eve the same right to state her take on the woman’s recovery that the OP did. I can’t buy into a god that chooses to save one woman while others die horrible deaths in earthquakes, avalanches, and at the hand of insane in-laws. If Eve’s comments harshed your sunny love-buzz, what must the daily paper do to you?
Well, leaving aside the question of whether a Deity exists and how that Deity may (or may not) have intervened in a cetain woman’s life…
…that is still one amazing story. I had no idea it was even possible to lose your skin because of an allergic reaction… <shudder>
Kalhoun “I can’t buy into a god that chooses to save one woman while others die horrible deaths in earthquakes, avalanches, and at the hand of insane in-laws.”
You should check out the thread in the Pit where someone asks something like “Why does God make babies deformed”. Talk about varied opinions!
I think it’s too bad that you think “god that chooses to save one woman while others die horrible deaths in earthquakes, avalanches, and at the hand of insane in-laws”. I disagree, but again this isn’t GD. Maybe you should start your own thread to debate THAT.

If God saved this poor woman, just what was He doing for the two days before treatment while her skin was falling off?
Uh. Yes, there are - lots of them. Several so-called Christian sects require their adherents to shun even common medical procedures in the belief that God will cure them. Some of them proscribe only certain types of treatments while others have total proscriptions.
Uncle Beer’s quote: “If God saved this poor woman, just what was He doing for the two days before treatment while her skin was falling off?”
There could be infinite answers to this…God only knows.
Maybe He wanted us to talk about it here on the SDMB? LOL!
To quote you again “Several so-called Christian sects require their adherents to shun even common medical procedures in the belief that God will cure them. Some of them proscribe only certain types of treatments while others have total proscriptions.”
You are correct sir. My apologies. I generalized the term “Christian” (as I think I’ve told others they shouldn’t do somewhere around the SDMB). Hmmm, how should I phrase that then, I wonder? “I personally would never discount what a doctor or nurse or medical science does.” How’s that.
Yogini
OneYogini, how else would you explain the fact that people just died in earthquakes, avalanches, and at the hand of insane in-laws, yet god chose to save the woman in the article? You say don’t know why? Just “cuz”? Sorry, but someone will have to come up with a more compelling reason than that before I sign on. And I have as much right to post in this thread as you or anyone else. If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, my friend.
Oh well, MPSIMS or not, it looks like we’ve got a debate.
For what it’s worth, I didn’t have a problem so much with eve’s statement to the effect that the treatment was getting short shrift in the credit department. I thought that scarlet went a little over the top by introducing the whole there-is-no-God-oh-yes-there-is dynamic. That’s why I chided her for introducig debate into mundane stuff. I had assumed that, for purposes of discussion, we could accept the OP’s premise in MPSIMS.
Based on the foregoing stuff, I sit corrected.
It’s interesting to note that, as aholibah pointed out, one of the medical staff felt comfortable attributing some credit to prayer. And likewise, the patient’s family requested donations to the hospital in ( I assume) gratitude and recognition of their efforts and skills.
IRL, the folks at the scene seem very comfortable with the ambiguities of the situation.
I agree with you eve, but what color was the kitten? Black, Grey, white, orange ? Let’s hunt that feline and mundane her with love.
I made no sence…argh.
BTW,FYI, i don’t read sarcasim easily… so when Eve said:
“Riiiiight. The “artificial skin called transcyte and medications” had nothing to do with her recovery. It was the praying.”
I thought it was face-value true statement. uh-fuh.
I agree. Maybe the OP didn’t intend this to become a debate, but it certainly has.
Off to Great Debates.

I didn’t know we were in GD. I can’t explain it Kalhoun…that’s why I said “God only knows”. If you want to go into the topic more, post a thread on GD and I’ll gladly put in my two cents (though I’m not a GD’er as I said before). I never said you didn’t have the right to post on this thread. (I didn’t think there was a question of my "stand"ing “the heat” - lol. CITE! lol!)

I agree it can be difficult to discern someone’s “tone”. I was jus’teasin ya!

Kalhoun - looks like we’re not in GQ anymore! lol!
If you want I’ll respond to you - for sure - but it’s going to get ugly in here once the GDers get to it. lol!
I’m leaving work - I’m going out tonite - I will respond to you tomorrow, if you like.
