For those snowed in today...

it could be worse - this is what “heavy snowfall” looks like in Russia.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrr

Holy shit!

Those look like the mini-poles that typically run beside railroad tracks, not full-height utility poles.

Well, the Russians are used to it.

I’m sure that before the winter’s out an inch of snow will bring England to a halt.

Makes it easy to restring any downed wires I guess … :smack:

Hope so. We’ve hardly even had a frost yet this winter. Damn Canadians and Americans hogging all the cold.

You get that and worse in the Sierras every year. It’s not uncommon to have 20-30’ of snow on the ground.

Yeah, you don’t have to go to Russia for that. There’s a very similar vintage photo of snow-to-the-top-of-telephone-poles in Michigan’s UP that I can’t seem to find a copy of online. I’ll post it if I can find it.

Wish I would have been snowed in this morning. But only my car was :frowning: Even though Cuomo declared a state of emergency last night, my damn employer wouldn’t tell us to stay home.

Wow! I’ve lived in Russia most of the last twenty years, and I’ve never seen anything like that!

The most snow I’ve seen there was in St Petersburg, due to its proximity to the Baltic. Siberia gets a lot, but the air is pretty dry for the most part.

For all the time I’ve been in Moscow, the winters there have been relatively mild. It’s the darkness and the muck that really get you down. In terms of cold and overall snow, Minneapolis and Toronto are far worse, but spring comes much earlier in both.

Yeah, Michigan gets a lot of snow, and the UP even more.

Here we only have about 8 inches. BUT, it’s also minus 4. Brrr.

I don’t know about Moscow, but Minneapolis and Toronto really don’t get a lot of snow at all. The cold and ice is much worse than the snow. You need to head north from both those cities to get to the real snow.

Wow.

For a snow hater like me, Russia would be a terrible place to Live.

What Sierras are you referring to? Not the Sierra Nevada in CA - it is unseasonably dry, and warm out here - those Sierras have very little snow (I think they said 19% of normal for this time of year). It is going to be a really bad drought year unless things pick-up toot-sweet.

Hey east coasters, and those in the midwest - please share the wealth a little - we are dying for some weather of any kind out west!

My Russian next door neighbor was outside this morning in single digit temps, grinning and wearing very light clothing as she shoveled the eight inches of snow we got last night. She’s from Moscow and thinks over sixty is hot weather.

If you really walked on snow that deep wouldn’t you sink in farther than shin height?

Depends on how densely packed it is, I imagine.

Perhaps not this year. But there’s a cabin I’ve gone to many times in Donner Pass where we’ve often skied off the roof of the 3 story building, had to duck to get under the power lines, and dug down 10’ to get to the front door. Sorry you’re not getting it yet this year.
