There have been a few posts in these forums for and against store loyalty cards. I have always been a proponent of them, my only complaint is I have more than fit in my wallet. Today I discovered another use for them. I visited my local Fred Meyer store for a few groceries. When I scanned my loyalty card a notice popped up and said there was an important message on my receipt. When I got my reciept there was a notice that some ice cream I had purchased a week ago was on the peanut butter recall list and to return it to the store. I came home and returned to the store with an almost empty container of ice cream. I received a full refund of what I paid for the ice cream plus 2 coupons good for free 48 ounce containers of ice cream. The ice cream I did eat didn’t kill me (yet) and I get more free.
If you’re having wallet problems, try out this site to put all of your card barcodes on one printout you can carry with you.
I haven’t done it (I only have 3 and they fit on my keychain) but I bookmarked the link from some other poster a while back.
Good news on the ice cream, too!
you didn’t get sick and you got free ice cream. that is a major win in my book.
They potentially saved your life, now you must submit yourself to them as is their will.
See? Sometimes it’s good that Big Brother is watching.
FWIW, none of the “loyalty” cards that I have know who I am. When we moved here, the previous person who had our phone number had a Safeway card, so we didn’t even have to register. At Smart and Final, they don’t even ask for a name. Just give them a phone number, and you’re good.
And nothing to carry, either, so long as you remember what phone number you used.
You don’t get the small keychain versions? I don’t keep any loyalty cards in my wallet, I just have them on my keychain.
I get the keychain version, but I only have my car fob and a house key on my ring, which I keep in my pocket, and those key tag things dig into my nuts. I mean, leg.
Because your nuts have been recalled?
When I first got my iPhone, I figured I’d be clever and scan all of my store cards onto one image, which I could then just keep as a photo in my phone. That way, I wouldn’t have to carry all the cards- I’d just pull up that image and say, “Scan this, retail monkey!”
Sigh. Didn’t work. Apparently the LCD screens can’t be scanned by the lasers. Oh well, it was a nice thought.
As an aside, did you know that the iPhone can natively view .psd (Photoshop) files? I didn’t have to flatten the image and save it as, say, a jpg. That was pretty cool.
I have one on my keychain, for a store that I don’t even go to once a year. I like the idea that the cops could identify my corpse from the loyalty card. My imagination is weird like that.
That’s pretty cool, anybody know of a website that would print that image on a credit card sized piece of plastic for you?
Print it small on paper and laminate?
They sell non-heat laminate paper for about $1.00 per sheet, which I use to laminate my insurance and registration for my car and motorcycle, brew pub membership cards, etc. I just thought it’d be cool to actually print them up on an actual plastic card. Thanks, though!
