Here where I am it’s now at 9am US Eastern time on Thu.
It’s mid afternoon at Etna. Steaming/smoking but not with any vigor. It’s otherwise a lovely sunny day there.
it’s ~3am at Kilauea. The V1 cam shows continuous spattering and flaming from the vent closest to the cam. No great amount of smoke/steam, but what there is is well-lit by light from both vents. The V2 cam shows total blackness. But the clock is counting with an accurate current time, so it seems the camera and feed are live.
I see some low fountains on V1 and the occasional glow in the mists on V2. Unfortunately, I have to run off now. I bet the excitement will begin as soon as I leave.
And now (12 noon Fri Eastern time) it’s done. Or at least on . Glowing but motionless lava across the larger crater floor, steam / smoke from the vents, and that’s it.
Maaaybe there’s simmering and splorting in the vent closest to the v1 cam. The steaming / smoking there is more vigorous and coming more in puffs than a flow. Which suggests to me a roiling red cauldron down inside that little cone that we can’t see.
Absolutely stunning right now. We just contemplated going to see it live, but opted against it - in the 2-3 hours it would take us to eat, drive up* there, park, and walk to the viewing area, it might stop for all we know. And I have a busy day tomorrow so need my sleep tonight. And we’ve already been to see a couple of the episodes.
I know, we’re spoiled.
*My instinct is to say “down” to the volcano, because we live NORTH of where the eruption is happening and basically drive due south to go see it. But the locals think that is hilarious, because elevation-wise, the volcano is indeed up. But it is such a gradual slope, it isn’t like climbing Mt. Washington or anything. The grade is fairly modest along a long stretch of highway.
Anyhow, I still struggle with it. I guess I should just say “over to” the volcano.
BONUS pic: a screenshot from the v1cam, as of right now:
Wow, that’s a great pic! no wonder you considered driving over to see.
And now, 6 hours after @CairoCarol’s post, there’s just a bit of illuminated steam / smoke and stationary lava with some glowing spots outside the two vents on v1 cam, and total darkness on v2 cam.
