It’s HOT!!
(Oh Christ, did I just do a Kardashian? Please kill me)
“That’s hot” is a Hiltonism, not a Kardashianism. But I think you knew that.
It was a great show during the afternoon yesterday. One of the commenters then mentioned that if you look closely almost all the ground in the field of view between the camera and the fountains is moving slowly to the left and towards us. It’s coming!!!
Right now at dawn on the US east coast it’s about 1am in Hawaii. So …
When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see.
[SCRAAATTCCH!!] Not so fast, Ben.
That’s no moonlight. The fountains are still obviously fountaining but the striking thing is most of the foreground and some of the background surface of the crater is dark, but all shot through with glowing orange cracks. And one large glowing orange river sliding slowly leftwards for the middle-distant main fountain. This part of the crater floor is now all new, all “wet”, and all semi-molten hot.
Such fun. Until somebody gets hurt.
Close enough. Please still kill me.
Now midafternoon on Mon Hawaii time the fountains are larger and the entire visible surface of the crater is liquid and moving more quickly. Implying the current lava is less inherently viscous, or is hotter, or both than the earlier stuff.
Seems to be settling down, but still pretty cool at 7pm Hawai’i time September 11.
I don’t know abut settling down; your pic seems t be abut the most extensive fountaining I’ve seen. Now at 1:30am Tue Hawaii time it’s still got mre and larger large fountains than 24 hours ago. And the mobility of the lava is still increasing.
The eruption started yesterday. So far I haven’t seen any reports of damage outside the caldera. It seems to remain contained within the crater.
The live cam footage is amazing, especially during the nighttime. You can click back in the stream to see earlier times and watch it start.

Cool. My wife and I hiked that caldera about a year ago.
Unfortunately that’s not true anymore; that link only lets you go back 12 hours at most.
That’s too bad. It’s still interesting to see it as the light changes though. It’s amazing to me that it stays at such an even simmer for such a long time. Not that I’m complaining! :looks at Pele:
Here’s the existing Kilauea eruption thread:
What’s all that about Pele ?! There are lots of mentions in the comments of that
youtube link. Is the footballer ?
I swear I searched for that before I started one!
It’s fun that most of us are a long way around the earth from Hawaii so we can watch it at night during our day and watch it in the daytime during our night.
Two very different scenes.
Hawaiian Goddess. When she gets mad, the volcanoes erupt. She is the spirit of volcanoes and righteousness.
Ah ! Now it makes sense !
It’s a shame she has to get mad before she puts on such a spectacular show !
It would at least be polite to say what she’s mad about so we can stop all the speculation and conspiracy theories!
You don’t cross Madam Pele, but when she gets angry, she puts on a spectacular show.
Now, noon-ish Hawaii time on the 13th it seems the show is winding down. For now.
