For volcano watchers - maybe you'll get lucky! {Kilauea may be erupting}

I saw some spitting on V1 yesterday morning.

And of course right after I posted, the spattering stopped. It’ll be off-again-on-again for a while, probably.

One wonders when this eruption cycle will finally end. Hawaii Public Radio had an event recently with a geologist, who said this type of eruption with intermittent episodes has occurred 4 times in the last 200 years. Which in geologic terms actually sounds like a lot to me, but he phrased it as “only 4.”

It’s started oozing on and off within the last couple hours. Nice flow going right now.

Seems to be about the same 6h later on Sun at 0745 ET = 0145 HT. Steady flow from one vent, some small spurting from the other. But no great volume and no fountaining.

Not very dramatic, but still cool.

V3 cam has the best view.

The activity now is much less than an hour ago. One hopes that wasn’t the whole show.

Sigh, here’s an update I just got from USGS:

Kilauea Eruption Episode 48 is expected to begin fountaining today or tomorrow. The light and variable wind conditions increase the possibility of ash and other lightweight tephra traveling long distances and potentially falling on communities downwind of the Kilauea Summit. Please take necessary precautions such as disconnecting your water catchment collection system from the water tank and closing windows to keep tephra out of your homes.

I’m still cleaning grit off of stuff from a couple of episodes ago when it blew in our direction. I’d really rather not have a repeat of that. (For all intents and purposes, we can’t close our windows: we have a screened in lanai [porch] with a desk, dining table, and other furniture, and the bottom half of our “indoor” windows are jalousies. Even if we could fully close up, it would be miserable without air circulation.)

Typically light & variable winds amount to no real direction, so I’d expect most of what goes up would come down fairly nearby in every direction.

Conversely I’d expect stronger winds to carry the stuff farther but in a specific direction.

Is your situation that you’re nearby but not downwind for the typical prevailing winds?

Madam Pelé is putting on a show. V1 has the best picture. V2 is zoomed way out for some reason.

V2 does, however, have a rainbow in the foreground. At least right now.

A rainbow over an erupting volcano is pretty much peak Hawaii. All it needs is a cheesy hula show to complete the trifecta.

Pele’s hair and tephra are very lightweight, so it’s easy for them to travel long distances with even a slight breeze. Once they’re up there, their landfall is slow and desultory. Wind direction does tend to be predictable, but not always (I think living on an island makes the winds slightly more variable than over a continental land mass), so the risk is there. I’m not sure what factors go into an announcement like the one just made, but having experienced Pele’s grit, I take it seriously!

Anyway, looks like the tephra is falling southward right now, and we’re north, so no worries for me. I feel bad for the people in the path of it, though. It’s a mess to clean up, inhaling it is bad for people and pets, and dogs get irritate feet from the Pele’s hair particles in their paws.

I find it interesting how, for the last few episodes, each episode starts with the left one (as seen on the v3 cam) repeatedly flowing and stopping, while the right one merely sputters a lot. And then suddenly the left one stops as the right one fountains.

Looks like it’s dying down now. Still fountaining, but not as high.
