Force black and white printing of color docs (Mac, HP)

Is there a way to force a printer to print in black and white rather than color? When printing out a map from google, I feel no real need to use up all my color ink. But I can’t find an option anywhere that will force black and white printing.

I’m running Mac OS X 10.4, and the printer is an HP printer/scanner/copier 1300. I have the All-In-One HP printer driver installed.

Any ideas?

You can change your printer settings to “grayscale”. Check your sys. settings.

It’s been ages since I’ve been on Mac, but do you get an option when the printer driver pops up for “Preferences” or something similar? On my PC, if I click preferences, I have options for quality (Best, Draft, Normal) and Color (Black & White, Color)

Once you reach the “Print” menu, make sure it is set for your printer. There should be various sections from a drop-down list, like “layout” “scheduling” “paper handler”, etc, you’ll want to go to “quality and media” and check the box near the bottom that says “greyscale printing”.
In fact, if your printer supports it, you may want to go to get all the settings you need in the quality and media menu (grayscale, lower quality, regular paper, etc.) and then go to “presets” -> “save as” in the Print menu and create a preset for your google map printing needs. You will be able to access this preset from any program, so it might also be handy for printing out quick stuff in word, etc. At any rate, that’ll remove your need to constantly navigate through those pesky printer menus to change settings. Good luck.

broken: Thank you. That was what I needed. I was sure that there was a way to do it, but sometimes Apple’s interfaces are not as intuitive as I’d like them to be.
