I’m not even sure if the title of this thread makes sense, so let me explain.
My printer is a HP DeskJet 722C. It’s a color printer but 90% of the time I only want a B&W hard copy. To print in color takes easily 10 times longer than in B&W. So usually when I print something I go through the Print…/Properties…/Paper/Quality routine to set the options to B&W.
What I’d like to do is set up a “virtual printer” called something like “HP B&W”, with all the options set up for B&W, and use that as my default printer.
So, can this be done? Will there be a conflict with the port settings?
Can’t you just set the printer itself to default to black & white? Go to Start - Control Panel - Printers and Faxes - YOURPRINTER - Printer - Properties - Printing Preferences - Paper/Quality - Color = Black & White.
Yes, it can be done, but to give good instructions we would need to know the operating system of the system it’s connected to and how it’s connected.
In general, you would need to install the printer a second time giving it a different name, then go into the printer properties and set the defaults to your preferred black & white settings.

So why was I thinking this was going to be hard?
Thanks for your help.
