Foreigners working in the US

The game company Wizards of the Coast is going to hold a contest where the prize if a six month paid internship there, starting January 2007. I’d like to apply, but one of the requirements is that I be “eligible to work in the United States”.

Does this mean the contest is effectively limited to Americans, or is it possible for a foreigner with no ties to the US to work there, provided he has a job waiting, so to speak?

I’d ask the company what it thinks the phrase means.

I’ve done that as well, but you guys remain my best source of knowledge, especially on things American.

I’d be willing to bet good money that, from the phrasing, it applies only to US citizens and legal permanent residents (i.e. “Green Card” holders).

The requirement that you’ve quoted suggests to me that they are not willing to go to bat for you with the Immigration authorities, and that the company doesn’t count as an educational institution (which would be eligible for a “non-employment” visa).

It would depend on your countries formal or informal relationship with the US. Following Australia’s free trade agreement (and maybe the support of the “war on terror”?) it’s apparently easier to “be eligible to work in the United States”.
