Forget 40K, let's talk Warhammer Fantasy.

There was a thread a while back talking about 40K, which reminded me about my old 5th edition Warhammer box set mouldering in the closet. I never really played when I first got it, since the few people I knew that played any kind of wargame were into 40K, which didn’t appeal to me. So I painted a couple figures and then forgot about it for several years.

Well, recently a Games Workshop store opened near me, so I stopped in to take a look, and found out there are a fair number of Warhammer players in the area after all. So I dug out the old set and took a look. I have Bretonnians and Lizardmen from the set, plus a handful of random miniatures I picked up here and there. Bretonnians seem to lack variety; it’s just squires, knights, heavy knights, super heavy knights, extra super heavy knights, and some peasant rabble.

I therefore decided on the Lizardmen. They look cooler, they’re tough, they get to ride dinosaurs, and they look cooler. Also, I had already painted a few Saurus and Skinks, whereas I only had one partially completed Bretonnian Knight. I even had a Kroxigor ready to go, from a Lizardmen Blood Bowl team I used to play. (Think rugby with weapons, and sometimes a ball that bites and runs away. Or explodes.) I picked up 2 more Kroxigors to make a unit, and I have one Temple Guard that I can probably use as a Scar-Veteran Hero. My wife says I currently have too many hobbies, so she won’t let me buy any more Lizardmen unless I decide to drop some of the others.

So my current force is this:
20 Saurus
32 Skinks
1 Temple Guard, which will probably represent a Hero
3 Kroxigors

If I load up on Sacred Spawnings and magic items, and also convert a few Saurus into standard bearers and such, I can get a 1000 point army out of this - small, but enough to let me decide if I want to spend more time and money on this.

Any tips for a Lizardman army? I’ve read the articles on the official site and searched for some others, but the ones out on the Web all seem to be based on older editions. Also, what other armies are good or bad to play, assuming I ever get that far? Orcs with all their goofy units seem like fun.

Anyone? Bueller?
