Forgotten Entertainers

I accidentally taped a movie called “One Rainy Afternoon” one time. The schedule said “The Third Man” was to air (which at the time I had never seen). I also missed the first minute or so, so I missed the title credits. So I ended up watching it. I decided, “OK, this ain’t post-war Vienna (or wherever), but I’ll watch it anyway.”

The second I saw Herbert, I though practically out loud, “Hey! It’s that guy from the WB cartoons!”

He made an embarassing drunken appearance on the Letterman show back in its early days. He did a whip-skills demonstration that Paul Schaeffer refused to participate in, and insisted on reading a poem over the closing credits.

Herbert’s trademark was to nervously tap the tips of his fingers together while saying, “hoo hoo hoo” or “woo woo woo” (descriptions vary). He was in Busby Berkeley films like Footlight Parade and Dames
