Forgotten memes

While an undergrad, I worked at our university help desk during this time. If you got up and didn’t lock your workstation, you came back to find dancing hamsters when you fired up Netscape.

How about peanut butter jelly time?

I liked the Family Guy version.

Can we forget- (which caused a SDMB meme)

I don’t know if this should strictly count, since it has no visual content whatsoever, just text, but I remember this one being referred to more than once back in the day:

Roy Orbison Wrapped In Cling Film

No, I’m a Zombie!

Regarding my Orbison In Cling Film post above:

This, along with many of the memes already mentioned in this thread, I first discovered somewhat after the fact through the now long defunct website Memepool.

(I got my first internet connection, somewhat late, in 2001 through Roadrunner in San Diego. As part of the package, they included an actual physical book which turned out to be a quite useful guide to the Internet for those new to it. It included detailed technical information, an introduction to Usenet, a guide to netiquette—remember that?—and a list of recommended sites for beginners to visit. This list included the aforementioned Memepool—and also a message board originated by fans of something called The Straight Dope by Cecil Adams. ‘I know what that is!’ said I (having read the books) and proceeded to bookmark it—possibly my first bookmark ever.

And now it’s 2026.)
