Formative Doper Experiences

There are a couple of threads floating around right now that refer to things that I’ll call “formative Doper experiences”. These are things that an awful lot of Dopers seem to have in common, usually from a different sort of misspent youth. A short list to start:

  • The ability to quote Monty Python ad nauseum
  • At least a passing familiarity with Star Trek, Star Wars, Hitchhiker’s Guide.
  • At least one viewing of the Princess Bride.
  • More likely than the average person to have seen South Park (the movie)
  • Have probably read LotR or at least the Hobbit
  • Grew up listening to Dr. Demento (or other access to offbeat musical genres).

Is this a fairly accurate list? How many of these are part of your formative experiences? What are some others?

No, that’s a pretty good list right there. I’d add:

Obsessive/compulsive in relation to spelling and grammar

Has seen all the Star Wars movies mutliple times

Watches the Simpsons more than once per week

Well, I value correct spelling and grammar (though no sign of OCD on it) – otherwise, none of the above.

Oh wait. I saw The Princess Bride once. I didn’t like it.

:stuck_out_tongue:

I forgot to throw in:

  • Love to stand apart from the crowd while feeling included!

So…why would you suggest *The Princess Bride * is any more important than say, Jaws?

With the exception of South Park (*Beavis & Butthead * fan here) I’d say you could make some cash, or at least free Straight Dope subscription as an online psychic.

And although I haven’t been able to get Dr. Demento in about 20 years I still have TONS of songs in my memory. Not least among them Dead Puppies.

Good job.

[English accent ON] This parrot is dead. [English accent OFF]
[Scottish accent ON] The engines cannae take it, captain! [Scottish accent OFF]
Yes, young Skywalker, only episodes 4-6 are worth watching.
I have this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left side.

My SDMB name is glee. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

However I have never watched any South Park, nor do I have any idea who Dr. Demento is.

I do have a letter from Professor Tolkien tucked away.

I definitely value spelling and grammar. I love Hitchhiker’s Guide. Otherwise, not me at all.

  • Monty Python kinda gets on my nerves after 10 minutes or so. I do love Fawlty Towers.
  • Star Trek and Star Wars are okay – I’ve seen some, but not all of the movies.
  • Was unable to watch more than 10 minutes of Princess Bride. Too much gratuitous violence. I don’t find violence funny.
  • Never seen South Park.
  • Never read LOTR or Hobbit. Didn’t see movie. Too much glorification of violence for me.
  • I like the Simpsons, but I’m at work when the show is on.
  • Dr. Demento was fun, but not a big deal to me.

Well, those last two are probably mostly American or Canadian and USA based. Dr. Demento is/was a radio program that played silly, inane, funny, goofy songs. It’s where Weird Al Yankovich got his start, where I first heard Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First?” routine, learned the Shaving Cream song, etc. South Park is a pretty rough parody on Americana, so it might not play well in London, much less the Midlands.

Not a bad list at all. I haven’t seen the South Park movie, nor do I think I’ve ever seen a whole episode of the series (we don’t have cable). I’ve seen the first three Star Wars movies a couple of times each at least, though I think I’ve only seen the clone one of the others (and that was a train-wreck sort of fascination one night on HBO in a hotel room – I couldn’t believe how awful it was). I was never much of a Trekkie, but growing up when I did you couldn’t help seeing most of the episodes if you watched TV at all. Hitchhiker’s Guide – check – even had the LPs of Hitchhiker’s Guide and Restaurant at the End of the Universe back in the day. I just finished re-reading all of them for the first time in twenty years or so. Was a huge Tolkien fan in junior high and early high school (enough to make me want to be a philologist) but grew out of it by college. Listened to Dr. Demento religiously in high school/college, and taped many, many of the shows. My wife and I both really like The Princess Bride – one of the handful of movies we agree on.

I loved the Simpsons in the first few seasons (and the shorts on the Tracy Ullman Show before that), but I just sort of quit watching TV at all for quite a while and never got back in the habit, so what I know about the show is mostly picked up by osmosis from threads here, and other pop culture references.

As for the spelling and grammar thing, I’m a former county spelling bee winner and was at one time a Ph.D. candidate in English lit. Whadda you think?

Reflexive skepticism.

Mangetout, I don’t know about that one! :stuck_out_tongue:

Every quote is sacred, every quote is good…

I can fake it.

I could explain To the Pain with fair accuracy;)

My yes.

Never did get into those.

Nope.

I’ll throw out some others:

have some bizarre cache of random trivia, possibly of some importance, possibly not.

Willingly watched Discovery/History/etc. channel as a child, adolescent, etc.

Given a list of popular movies, can pick at least one and detail inaccuracies with the setting/topic/etc.

Disturbingly good with some aspect of a computer - a game, program, coding, something. We spend too much time on computers for most of us not to have some deeply-honed skill in one particular area.

-Yep.
-Yep.
-I saw the part where the guy put Iocadane power into both of the goblets because he’d built up an immunity to it. Then I had to leave for some reason.
-I want to see it.
-I’m learning Quenya. That answer your question?
-Now I’ve got “Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road” stuck in my head.

Could be worse. I have just earwormed Kinko, Kinko, the Kid-Loving Clown.

Yes to everything except the Star Wars stuff. I’ve seen Chapter 4 twice and 5 and 6 once each, although I will stop and watch a bit if I come across them channel-surfing.

I would think other formative Doper experiences would be stuff like:

Mourning a prominent posters death, such as WallyM7 or Persephone. :frowning:

Seeing a longtime poster start to misbehave and get crazier and more defiant and finally getting banned, with a ten-page reaction thread in the Pit about it.

Using the board to experience/interpret 9/11 in the days after it happened.

I hit all the OP’s warning signs except Dr. Demento. (Don’t much care for Wierd Al, either). And while I enjoy Monty Python and can quote it extensively, I no longer feel the urge to do so.

[sub]Burma![/sub]

Mostly.

Eh, I don’t want to be the spoilsport, but I’m not too sure we can easily craft a demographic profile of Dopers. Perhaps a desire for accuracy in writing and speaking dominates, but the Monty Python and Star Trek trivia do not.

Political affiliations span the spectrum; we’ve got left-wing Democrats, right-wing Republicans, centrists who might vote either, the apathetic and bona fide wing nuts.

Christians abound, in all flavors, but we’ve also got plenty of Jews and atheists. Not too many Muslims have shown that aspect of their lives, but there’ve been a few. Wiccans, witches and the like have periodically appeared - some have hung around. I don’t recall any Shinto or Hindu Dopers declaring themselves such, but there’s a lot I’ve missed.

As I’m sure the regs know, age (besides >90, so far) is not a determinant.

I haven’t seen all that many Firesign Theater references, but I’m sure there are Dopers out there who could provide them.

How many of us have been incarcerated? I’m sure there’s a not small contingent.

Many here are college educated, and many pursue professional careers, but plenty of others work at jobs that don’t define them or don’t work at all.

Whenever I’ve tossed out a Frank Zappa reference, somebody’s picked up on it - but I’m sure it was missed by many.

It appears that the majority of Dopers are straight, but our gay contingent is certainly present.

I never did manage to see an episode of Seinfeld (sp?), but I did see part of a Simpsons episode.

And, while this board is probably dominated by those of us in the U.S., we’ve quite the Canadian, Brit and Aussie presence, as well as a good deal of input from all over the globe.

We have many with quite the background in computing, but many others obviously do not converse that well with their machines.

Nah, this is a street corner in a big, big cybercity.

…but thanks to the liberal reciprocity laws here, Kinko can be with you boys and girls today, or anytime. :: evil Kinko laugh “heh heh hehhhhh” ::

…my legs get tired of standing out in the parking lot handing out steel tootsie rolls to you little rugrats, so if anyone wants to come back to Kinko’s trailer he’d really really like it…really really. :: evil Kinko laugh “heh heh hehhhhh” ::

Curse you…that was dredged up from more than 25 years ago. More is sure to follow. God what a creepy song!

cite?

No, but I can quote Friends and Seinfeld ad nauseum. Does that count?

I’ve only seen the the Star Trek movie with the whales, never any of the TV shows, I’ve only seen Star Wars episodes 4-6, and only know Hitchhiker’s Guide by name from having heard about it here. Never read it.

Own it. I’ve seen it at least a dozen times, and can quote from it.

Never seen it.

I read The Hobbit in junior high (didn’t care for it), and only saw the first half of the first LOTR movie.

Nope. I’ve heard of him, but don’t know anything about him. I listened to 70s and 80s pop growing up.

Can I still hang out here?
