Formative Doper Experiences

Yeah, I still do this. The encyclopedia, mostly.

I think I’m only a psuedo-doper…

NO:
*The ability to quote Monty Python ad nauseum
*Grew up listening to Dr. Demento (or other access to offbeat musical genres).
*Obsessive/compulsive in relation to spelling and grammar (I spell and grammar-itize too horribly for this one.)
*Has seen all the Star Wars movies mutliple times
*Love to stand apart from the crowd while feeling included!
*Given a list of popular movies, can pick at least one and detail inaccuracies with the setting/topic/etc.
*Disturbingly good with some aspect of a computer - a game, program, coding, something. We spend too much time on computers for most of us not to have some deeply-honed skill in one particular area.
*Mourning a prominent posters death, such as WallyM7 or Persephone.
*Seeing a longtime poster start to misbehave and get crazier and more defiant and finally getting banned, with a ten-page reaction thread in the Pit about it.
*Using the board to experience/interpret 9/11 in the days after it happened.
*Another Doper experience: reading the dictionary or an encyclopedia for fun.

Kinda:
*At least a passing familiarity with Star Trek, Star Wars, Hitchhiker’s Guide. (Star Wars only, and only passing enough to wonder what the deal is?)

Yes:
*At least one viewing of the Princess Bride. (Blah!)
*More likely than the average person to have seen South Park (the movie)
*Have probably read LotR or at least the Hobbit
*Watches the Simpsons more than once per week
*Have some bizarre cache of random trivia, possibly of some importance, possibly not.
*Willingly watched Discovery/History/etc. channel as a child, adolescent, etc. (Now, if you want to bring the “detail the inaccuracies” coment down here I’m all set.)

Not a big fan, but familiar with it.

Seen every (or nearly) episode of TNG. Star Wars I’ve never watched much, only 1&2, and I own a copy of Hitchhiker’s

Yes, but not by choice. It was amusing though.

No, but I’ve never watched South Park at all. I should though.

Currently somewhere in the middle of The Two Towers. Been there for about 2 years now, don’t think that’s going to change anytime soon.

Who?

Bad spelling and grammar do annoy me, but I only fix my own mistakes.

Who let her in here?

  • The ability to quote Monty Python ad nauseum Yep.
  • At least a passing familiarity with Star Trek, Star Wars, Hitchhiker’s Guide.**Yep.****Yep.**Yep.
  • At least one viewing of the Princess Bride.Yep.
  • More likely than the average person to have seen South Park (the movie)** Nope** (but I would watch it if it came on)
  • Have probably read LotR or at least the HobbitYep.
  • Grew up listening to Dr. Demento (or other access to offbeat musical genres).Yep.
  • The ability to quote Monty Python ad nauseum -
Usually during dinner, I’m often heard quoting: “I cawn nawt aet anawthaw bite…BUCKET!”

  • At least a passing familiarity with Star Trek, Star Wars, Hitchhiker’s Guide.
    “He’s dead, Jim.”
“Odo chee atu Han Solo?”…“No, Guido…I don’t have the money with me.”
Ford’s towel and satchel comes to mind.

  • At least one viewing of the Princess Bride.
Liked it in it’s own quirky way, although it’s been at least a decade since I’ve seen it.

  • More likely than the average person to have seen South Park (the movie) -
“I’m SUPER…thanks for asking, all things considered I must say…I’m SUPER…no, nothing bugs me…!!!..don’t you think I look cute in this hat!”

  • Have probably read LotR or at least the Hobbit -
Read it half a lifetime ago.

  • Grew up listening to Dr. Demento (or other access to offbeat musical genres)
Actually made a petition from my high school (Fontana HS) to dedicate the song “Dead Puppies” to our rival HS (silenius’s alma mater btw) - Redlands High Terriers.
It made the #1 request for the week on the Dr. Demento show back in 1981.

That’s right, and we’re all fiendishly attractive. So are three chief attributes are:

  • Outcasts
  • Genius
  • Attractive
  • And an almost fanatical dedication to the Pope.

Damn, that’s four. Cardinal Bigalls, bring in the soft cushions…

Pssst! Hey, NurseCarmen, hot Doper wimmin don’t have to pass all the tests… if they do, it’s a bonus, but just smart, friendly and gorgeous is okay. You should know that.

I was punished with time-outs as a child… in a room with 5 different sets of encyclopedias. I was bad a lot.
And one of the reasons why DeHusband is so cool? A billion books and encyclopedias, but he also has this - acomplete set of “THE CHILDREN’S HOUR”. I loved these books as a kid!!!

I’ll keep him.

  • The ability to quote Monty Python ad nauseum *AND sing the songs

  • At least a passing familiarity with Star Trek, Star Wars, Hitchhiker’s Guide. *AND Pratchett and Gaiman, as has been suggested

  • At least one viewing of the Princess Bride. Multiple

  • More likely than the average person to have seen South Park (the movie) - dragged there by my kids, whom I have infected. I’m always embarrassed to like it, though. I do not approve.

  • Have probably read LotR or at least the Hobbit - high school and after, also the Silmarillion and at least on book on JRRT himself

  • Grew up listening to Dr. Demento (or other access to offbeat musical genres). - Found him as an adult. Used to have a couple of shows taped, but my kids stole them. I’m sure of it no matter what they say. I think they wore them out.

Reading the dictionary or an encyclopedia for fun. - guilty, guilty, guilty

Obsessive/compulsive in relation to spelling and grammar - not obsessive, just unable not to notice. I don’t necessarily comment on it. I was a tech editor for a little bit, now I spot typos that I used to just read over. Sucks.

Love to stand apart from the crowd while feeling included! - yeah - and sometimes I feel a little more connected with people I’m writing to than speaking to.

Willingly watched Discovery/History/etc. channel as a child, adolescent, etc. - not available when I was a child, National Geographic specials. And my dad got us up at 4 in the morning to watch liftoffs from the Cape.

How about Dr. Who? (I can’t tell if that was suggested or if someone just didn’t know who Dr. Dememto was.) Played around with a conlang? Tried making one?

  • The ability to quote Monty Python ad nauseum

I have been “politely” asked to stop reciting the dialogue of the *Holy Grail * along with the actors

  • At least a passing familiarity with Star Trek, Star Wars, Hitchhiker’s Guide.

Star Trak TOS, and NG; but not so much the others. Star Wars ep. 4-6, not 1-2 (and not too hopeful about Ep. 3). Huge fan of THHGTTG, and eagerly anticipating the new movie

  • At least one viewing of the Princess Bride.

Plus and extra few dozen for good measure

  • More likely than the average person to have seen South Park (the movie)

I come up empty on this one. I find the series funny, but have never had an overwhelming sdesire to see the movie.

  • Have probably read LotR or at least the Hobbit

About once a year since high school

  • Grew up listening to Dr. Demento (or other access to offbeat musical genres).

I’m not sure about “grew up listening to”, but I’ve heard my fair share
As for some of the “add-ons”:

Spelling and grammar fiend: check (More spelling than grammar) Nothing grates on me more that receiving email with misspelled words. Use the spell check, for Og’s sake!

Reading the dictionary/encyclopedia: you forgot the atlas. I used to spend hours “travelling” around the world. One night when I was about 10 or so I was supposed to be asleep in bed, when I was caught hiding underneath my covers with a flashlight looking at the atlas. My parents had some trouble figuring out what to do with me for that one. On the one hand, I was *supposed * to be asleep, On the other hand, it *was * a reference book…

Having a bizzare cache of random trivia: There’s so much random trivia up there that I barely have any room left for anything “important”.

Another Dr. Who fan here. Currently having a tough time deciding whether we should replace the 50 or so stories we have on VHS with DVDs, or have a “mixed collecition”.

The Prisoner, anyone?

I though of starting a thread - “SD starter pack” along these lines and chickened out. I’m glad there are some No, No, No people here, it would be creepy otherwise. Meanwhile:

The ability to quote Monty Python ad nauseum I try to stop before nausea sets in. Nih!

At least a passing familiarity with Star Trek, Star Wars, Hitchhiker’s Guide. Pratchett, Gaiman More than passing I’d say (except for Star Wars) Can explain the Total Perspective Vortex, name the Anhk-Morpork Watch (living and un-dead), and Dream’s siblings.

At least one viewing of the Princess Bride Seen it ages ago, only a dim memory.

More likely than the average person to have seen South Park (the movie) Seen a few ep’s, fun at first.

Have probably read LotR or at least the Hobbit Half read the Hobbit, not for me. Grew up with the Narnia books, so nearly there?

**Grew up listening to Dr. Demento (or other access to offbeat musical genres)**Not Dr.D (whoever he is) Did grow up with The Bonzos, Tom Lehrer, solo Syd and a rather eclectic mix of stuff.

Reading an encyclopedia for fun As a kid maybe.

Obsessive/compulsive in relation to spelling and grammar Not obsessive, I do spell check.

Willingly watched Discovery/History/etc. channel as a child, adolescent Tomorrows World! Horizon etc. (BBC shows)

Computer knowledge It’s my job, I’m supposed to know stuff. Been a while since the last deathmatch tho’.

Dr. Who? Tom Baker is THE Doctor.

5 of 6 items on the OP list describe me pretty well. I have no idea who Dr Demento is.

In fact I think the OP list describes quite a few message board communities I participate in. It may be a generational thing as well as a geek thing.
