It’s a simple .exe you save into the main CoH folder on your hard drive that bypasses logging in and server selection to drop you directly into the creator.
Pros:
[ul]
[li]Fully functional, including watching powerset animations in the customizer screen![/li][li]Access all implemented costume items, as of shutdown, unlocked[/li][li]by adding a switch to the target properties of a shortcut, you will even have access to NPC and dev-only items[/li][li]You can (still) locally save and load costume and power-set designs[/li][li]If you have a beta client, add it to that to see unimplemented costume bits as well![/li][/ul]
Cons:
[ul]
[li]You must have an intact installation with issue 23 or 24[/li][li]You can’t actually save the finished character (ie, with name, bio, and power choices)[/li][li]Still can’t play the game[/li][li]Apple computers have a more complex installation process (see linked thread)[/li][/ul]
Heh, well going from my private messages most of the other 'dopers who’d care were already aware of it, but I didn’t think that many people were still checking out the fansites and I wanted to get the word out. I only found it by accident. But actually, I’m just bumping this thread in the hopes that Der Trihs sees it since he has PM’s turned off.
I played with a little a few weeks back. Of course, the app is doing nothing but giving the minimal feedback that the user’s home system needs to get past the login step, kinda like hotwiring your disconnected phone so you can dial yourself and make it ring.
I would like to see Titan or another group get CoX back on the air. I find myself missing it more and more.
Poke around the Titan boards; no one’s officially declared anything AFAIK, but it sounds like they’re working on it.
It interests me because apparently NCsoft shut down attempts to set up private servers for Auto-Assault after it was cancelled, but I feel like you could make a pretty strong argument that it doesn’t pose any threat/harm to their copyrights when they’ve shut the game down, laid off the entire dev team, and the fact that it’s so old/niche that there are extremely poor odds of any other company wanting to buy it off them (now that the studios been disbanded). However, I don’t think that would hold up in a legal setting though, or even whether it would be a US court or South Korean court.
I guess the real question is what other legal precedent, if any, is their for private servers of defunct MMO’s? And would CoH’s being free to play have any impact on the matter?
I’m hoping that they can get one up and running and that NCsoft will just let it be, but I have a feeling that the best bet is one of the two spiritual successor projects fans on Titan are trying to develop independently.

I saw it; I don’t have CoX installed anymore though. As for PMs, I have mine set to “Receive Private Messages only from Contacts and Moderators”.

Ouch, sorry to hear that.
Oh yeah, I forgot SDMB had a friends lists.:smack:
