Formula One: The Ferrari processional series

Jesus, what has happened to my favorite form of motorsports? I mean, I’m a huge fan of Ferrari and all, but the racing has gone right down the shitter! The Hungarian GP this weekend was the most boring, dull, inane parade I’ve seen in a long time. What the hell are the other teams doing? Did they just stop trying? Whats going on with Williams? They looked like shit! And whats with the serious financial problems in the rumor mill that might reduce the grid to a dozen or so cars in the near future?

A while back I started a thread about F1 and predicted, correctly, that Rubens (both of them!) would start to rack up wins as soon as Shu wrapped up the championship, as pay-back for pulling over in Austria. This happend this weekend and it was pretty clear to me that Michael could have passed his teammate and was indeed much faster. Instead, he just phoned it in and sat behind him. (this is the smart thing to do, but makes for shitty entertainment)

Spa had better be a better specitacle for the sport’s sake! I am going to Indy this year and hope to see at least a little racing.

Where am I going with this? I don’t know, my train of thought left the station long ago! I just hope that the remainder of the season has a couple of moments worth tuning in for. If not, there is always World Rally and Moto GP. Like Sherriff Bart said, “Truth be told, its getting pretty damn dull 'round here!” or something like that.

The answers to all lifes mysteries will become apparent when you have mastered the art of pissing up rope.

Ah, the Hungaroring. The track that shouldn’t be on the calendar to begin with.

There have been two instances in which this race was worth watching. In 1992 or 1993, it rained, and stopped, and rained, and stopped, et cetera. A gazillion pitstops and a very entertaining race. In 1997, Damon Hill looked to get his revenge on Frank Williams, as he steered his Arrows to the lead of the pack, closing in on the finish. In the penultimate lap, the poor Arrows started misfiring, and Hill had to let Villeneuve through. Jacques had to go through the GRASS, though. Hill finished second, and I’ve never seen anyone so disappointed with the runner-up position. The stuff of legends.

Other than that, the Hungaroring is utter shite.

Yes, Ferrari is dominant right now. That probably won’t change as long as Schumi is there. The combination is just too strong. But the races can be entertaining.

Expect Spa to be thrilling, as it always is. With a bit of luck, there’ll be rain! Rain in the Ardennes! It doesn’t get any better than that.

Expect real top level competition to pick up in 2004, after Schumacher retires with his 6th world title. Who’ll be the man in 2004? Could be Ralf, could Montoya. My dark horse is Kimi Raikonen, who showed what he’s made of again this weekend.

It’s still the fastest and coolest racing discipline on earth.

Yes, rain at Spa is a sure recipe for excitement. I predict Montoya to be the next “Man” in the sport. He seems to have the head for it, more so than others in the sport now. I don’t know quite why, but I figure Kimi to flame out, kinda like Villeneuve. Fast and furious when on a top team, but unable to produce from mid-field.

As long as we are making bold predictions, I predict the team to watch is Toyota!! Why? One simple reason: Money. They have more and can spend more.

F1 with full-factory Honda, Nissan and Toyota teams would be kinda fun, but I would also anticipate the grid full of less-than-F1-caliber Japanese drivers, put there by the factorys.

Hey Coldy! Want I should send you a postcard from Indy?
