I was out in the yard this afternoon and a dog wandered up. It is a medium sized cocker spaniel type dog, and is very friendly. Unfortunately I cannot keep him. I do have him in my backyard right now. I’m trying to decide. Should I call animal control to pick him up, or turn him back loose so he can resume his wanderings? He had a leash and collar but no ID. He otherwise appears healthy and is very friendly. Thanks for any advise.
Call animal control and any other local shelters/rescues. If you live in a craigslist city, add him to the Found section and look at any lost dog listings. Make sure he has some water, and he will survive until you can get him dropped off at the local shelter.
Don’t turn him loose to get hit by a car or starve to death. Call animal control. He may be microchipped.
Try taking him to a vet with a scanner and see if he’s chipped. That might explain the lack of an ID tag.
Thanks for the advice everyone. The dog already escaped from my yard while I was trying to decide what to do. He must be a real escape artist, explaining how he got out in the first place.
With a leash and collar, he must belong in the neighborhood. In fact, maybe someone was taking him for a walk. Some people will let a dog run free with a leash as they walk. I think it’s dangerous for the dog. Anyway, the dog probably found its way home.
