I’ve been living in a slum off a dirt alley in Spenard (AK) for two years … micro-kitchen with chipped enamel sink, less than 4’ of counter/prep space, shortness of cabinets, worn and scarred linoleum (it sure ain’t vinyl!), refrigerator drain that doesn’t work (I swamp out below the vegetable drawer weekly), tiny bathroom sink and toilet top are broken (mended with glue). Living room is too small to hold a couch … … said slum apartment was burglarized, and my 14-year-old Geo Metro was stolen. [Got vehicle back; nothing else.]
AND in AUGUST, I move to: Palmer! Out of Los Anchorage! Actually 5 mi. out of Palmer on the P-W Hwy … into a 4-year-old spotless quadriplex. GIGANTIC kitchen with brand new appliances, built-in microwave, too many birch cabinets to count; huge living room with ceiling light/fan (operates from wall switch; variable), two BIGGIE windows with THE VIEW (i.e., mountains , coat closet, linen closet; biggie bathroom with REAL medicine cabinet (not just some lousy mirror on the wall), etched glass bath enclosure with jacuzzi tub; BIG walk-in closet with shelves topside & a window; BIG bedroom, too! And it’s within my budget!
Heat paid, FREE laundry room - no more hoarding quarters!
Just though you all needed to know. And I forgot to mention the DECK !!!
I submit that even though the subject is neither kitten nor newborn, pictures are definitely in order. Especially of the mountains.
And I know enough of Spenard to find your description quite believable. The only problem I have is that there did not seem to be a middle ground between the Seventh Circle of Hades and Elysium — I mean, was there nothing in Anchorage that could entice you out of your slum-sweet-slum? You say that the new apartment is within your budget; since it’s too late for the Ice Classic and too early for the PFD, I surmise that a sudden influx of money is not the factor. Which would lead a lesser being to speculation that you have photos of the landlord in a compromising position with a moose.
In any case, congratulations. And say hi to Sarah if you run into her (not literally). I understand that she’s going to have some free time pretty soon.
Congrats! I know that excitement… just moved into a house after living with three people living in a tiny two bedroom apartment… I actually have a dishwasher! And a basement! But I’m still sharing a room… but at least I like my roommate: I’m marrying him in January!
It all sounds great, but I’m especially excited for your liberation from quarter hoarding. We moved just a year ago to an apartment with laundry included. It seems like a small thing but it’s such a relief not to have to think about what inexact change to give to maximize quarter return.
And you’ve inspired me to stop leaving belongings in my car… I’ve always been pretty devil-may-care “who’d bother stealing a 7 year old Escort?” about it.
