I would guess (and I work in broadcasting, so you can call it an educated guess) that the mainstream media are not going to touch this with a ten-foot pole. They get hundreds and thousands of press releases a day. Reporting on each and every one of them would be pointless, ridiculous, and give credibility to those who deserve none.
Well, admittedly, it wouldn’t take much to convince me Fred is a loon. It’d be damn interesting to see a full psych profile, though.
Lacking that, I’m fairly confident in the consensus oppinion.

If that is in fact the case, it’s a poorly executed joke, since there are scads of Protestants who really do believe that Catholics are idolators and heretics who will burn in hell.
In order for a joke like that to work, it has to be hyperbole.
Well, that and it would have to have come from someone other than Phelps, who has demonstrated no appreciable sense of humor and for whom this flyer is perfectly in-character.
As kung fu lola and jayjay point out, there’s really no sign that this an April Fool’s Joke. Either Phelps has no sense of humour, or his whole church is one long-running joke in very bad taste.
Right under the announcement for the flyer on the main page is another announcing plans to picket Falwell’s funeral! Come on – you can hardly get more homophobic than Falwell without actively killing people.
I too, wonder about the relationship between Chick and Phelps. I’d bet anything they despise each other over some incredibly minor point of theology.

Well not me. Phelps is no more a blight on the ass of Christianity than Osama bin Laden. I’m willing to deny him the label of a Christian.
A significant contingent of dopers convinced me that the Nation of Islam members are not Muslims in previous threads. I see even less reason to call Phelps a Christian.
NOI aren’t legit Muslims because they accept Elijah Muhammad as a prophet, and they have other beliefs that are un-Islamic. Fred is a Christian, albeit a very unpleasant one, because he accepts Jesus as the Son of God. Using “Christian” as a synonym for “nice” robs the word of meaning and is also Christo-centric–why do we say a nice person “acts like a Christian”? Couldn’t we equally say he acts like a Jew, or a Muslim, or a Buddhist?
However, Fred is also batshit insane and has no relationship to any branch of mainline Protestant Christianity (who I guess are all “fag churches” to him) despite calling his family’s lair Westboro Baptist Church–I can’t imagine any Baptists are willing to claim him.
Pretty much. Two of his sons-Nate and Mark, pretty much confirmed it.
The person who was hounded into suicide was the one-time fiance of his eldest son, Fred Jr. Her name was Debbie, and Fred didn’t like her because she was a Catholic orphan raised by nuns. After she killed herself, Fred was dancing around the house singing, “Ding dong the whore is dead!” I heard that Fred Jr. was pretty broken over it and after that just did whatever dear old dad wanted him to.
That account of what his family went through was horrifying.
But really, is anyone surprised that he did this? I mean, this is the guy who said Mister Rogers is burning in hell! (Although why do they always have to be PDF files? I HATE those things!)

You know, it occurs to me that Phelps seems to be very well-funded. I mean, his church is basically his family, right? But he doesn’t work for a living, and he always flying all over the world picketing people in some vague hope of grabbing a headline.
Where does this guy get his cash?

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Fred Phelps denounced Jack Chick as a “fag enabler” for not spending every waking moment of his life denouncing homosexuals like he does. Phelps is that hardcore. :rolleyes:
I think, based on my bolstered understanding of his sanity, that Phelps is something of a red herring in terms of any substantive discussion of comparative religion. The more relevant topic may be abnormal psychology. Chick is chauvinistic in the extreme, but I don’t think he’s a madman; nor do I think Chick’s interpretation of Christianity is entirely unorthodox. Phelps and Chick would likely never see eye to eye because the former is clearly mentally deranged, and the latter is probably not. My guess is that, despite their theological leanings, Phelps and Saddam would have a lot more in common.
