I generally try to think of Stern as little as possible, I admit. But this is a good application of one of Napoleon’s laws: “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”
And, simply, expressing these views on a national broadcast is a PR mistake of the highest level. So kudos to Stern.
And like I said before, he came here to Pittsburgh to try and picket Mister Roger’s memorial service. Mister Freaking Rogers!
I wonder if there’s anything on Terri Schiavo on his site-any time someone remotely famous or well-known dies, he has a blurb about how they’re in hell. (Yeah, I know she wasn’t exactly, “famous”).
His church seems to be his children (except for the four that left-Kathy, Nate, Mark and Dorothy), his wife, and various grandchildren and sons and daughters in law.
I’d like to see a psych’s opinion of Fred, too. I’m curious what drove Fred into his pscyhosis. My hypothesis is that he has some homosexual feelings buried deep down, some attraction to the male body. He’s aware of these feelings and consciously acknowledges them. However, his upbringing, based on literal biblical interpretation, forces him to loathe those feelings. I think he’s literally angry and frustrated at himself for being something that God loathes or, more correctly, something that he thinks God loathes. He hates what he is and projects that anger outwards thru his protests and the domination he has over his family.
Read the book, that is talked about. Someone, Fred’s sister I think, has an idea of why he is like he is. She’s said that she won’t tell until he’s dead.
The homophobia thing is nothing at all compared to what he’s done to his children and his wife. If “Addicted to Hate” is true, then Mr. Phelps is a real live psychopath.
I’m sure he’ll have some nasty blurb about Terri Schiavo, probably because she’s Catholic and if she truly had done the Lord’s Work and gone out and shot every “fag” she saw God would have rescued her brain.
Who knows what passes for rational thought in that man’s worm-raddled brain?
I think he’s massively repressed. I’m suggesting that deep inside him somewhere is a Richard Simmons trying to get out. His kind of profound homophobia almost always masks a repressed self loathing of one’s own feelings.
I know I don’t really think that there’s any connection between homosexuality and wearing a dress. It was a joke.
I don’t think that’s it, because before his whole “god hates fags” crusade, he used to act the same way, only then his target was his family. Later, his eldest daughter confronted him and somehow convinced him to stop (because they were all going to walk out on him or something), and after reading an article about pedophiles in the local neighborhood (yes, I KNOW gays are not pedos), he decided to target those “godless fags.”
Mad as a hatter. He first became known when he wrote a letter to TIME or NEWSWEEK back in the 1950s complaining about coeds kissing on the local campuses. Strange, strange man.
Question-doesn’t he have cancer, and is said to be in poor health? I know we’re not supposed to wish death, but I’m DYING to know what his sister’s going to spill, and thus I hope he kicks it before she does.
He didn’t just come on to the landscape with Matthew Shepard’s death/funeral.
I’m disappointed dopers feel the need to pit this guy. I’m glad you are all against him and what he represents. But any acknowledgment of him, just promotes him.
If his nuttiness stems from repressed homosexuality, and it has developed into something this bizarre, I suspect Richard Simmons would be too butch for him.
I think that’s a question which makes Phelps, pustule that he is, worthy of some consideration despite his festering sickness. Sad truth is, insanity is often a key trait of successful leaders. You get somebody who is psycho enough to trumpet his hate from the rooftops, and I don’t think it ought to be an enormous surprise that the vermin come out of their holes like they’d heard the call of the Pied Piper. I don’t know if Phelps himself is a figure of sufficient charisma, but if he is, he could be dangerous. One doesn’t even have to have that large of a following to do some dreadful mischief, as the friends and family of Sharon Tate could easily attest.
No, I think it’s good to be educated about people like Phelps. And where he gets his money is something quite worthy of illumination, IMO.
