Frederick Hart's acrylic sculptures

How were these made. Hart, according to a variety of sources, developed the technique, but I’ve been unable to find an explanation of it. I haven’t actually seen one in person (meaning in three dimensions) so I can’t tell if the pieces are sculptures within sculptures or… A friend of mine suggested that you could focus three or four lasers on a point inside a solid block of lucite and “carve” from the outside. I don’t think the technology is that advanced yet. Any ideas?

I had this big nice long answer, but then I bombed. Go figure.

My husband helped to set up these sculptures when the museum he was in featured him. They are truly beautiful in person, the way the light plays on them. You are correct, he did create one or more sculptures and cast them inside of each other. I think he was in the middle of patenting it at time or had already done so.

In checking out more of that website I see he’s not living anymore. It really is a great loss, he was a very talented and nice man.
