Did anyone else go this morning? My wife and I went about 7:30 and got seated pretty quickly. But by the time we left half-an-hour later the waiting area was packed and the line was beginning to go out the door.
As for the breakfast - typical Denny’s, but really hit the spot.
Huh. All of the Denny’s here closed up shop several years ago. I didn’t realize they were still a going concern.
I live in the South and there seem to a ton of them around here. Anyway they had a commercial during the Super Bowl announcing the free breakfast today. It was the one with the chickens screaming.
I’ve had enough bad service experiences at Denny’s that I long ago vowed never to set foot in one again. It’ll take a lot more than a free* breakfast to get me to change my mind.
The commercials were fun, though!
*Assuming the time I’d have spent waiting out the door is worth less to me than the regular price of a Grand Slam…
I was going to go for my free Grand Slam at Denny’s but I got held up in the line for free kicks to the junk downtown. Damn the luck.
A large number of my seniors got up at 4:30am to get a free breakfast this morning. Never underestimate the lure of free food to teenagers.
I thought that you were speaking of a retirement home! lol

My wife and I did this last year, on the way home from a doctor’s appointment. I must have driven past half a dozen Denny’s trying to find one with a reasonable-looking line, before I gave up and just went to the one closest to home. Where we had to wait in line for a good hour and a half.
The Grand Slam was pretty much as I remembered them from thirty years ago. Edible. I really felt sorry for the poor souls who had to work that crowd, so when the check came (for two cups of coffee), I put down a ten.
And it didn’t even occur to me that they might be doing it again this year. I don’t regret sitting it out.
I was half-tempted just to go and tip well. I wonder what the tips are like, if the decent human beings balance out the freeloaders?
The nearest Denny’s is 9 miles away and difficult to get to without a car.
I’m not a breakfast snob or anything, but Denny’s would have to pay me to eat there. Their sausage links are creepy.
Since Shoneys died (in Arkansas), Dennys is the only decent Breakfast option at a good price. IHOP is too expensive.
Dennys made a mistake eliminating the free birthday meal. They did that for several years and was a smart way to introduce new customers to the chain.
btw, I really, really miss Shoneys breakfast buffet. Man, that was good.
I couldn’t make it to Denny’s today if I wanted to, what with all the snow falling. Chances are they’re not even open right now anyway.
I’ll second that. A breakfast buffet is a genius concept.
I’m guessing you didn’t watch the Superbowl.
If I had to guess, I would think that a sizeable percentage of those people who would be willing to wait in line for over an hour for a free 5 dollar meal are the types who would feel that their waiting time absolved them of any need to tip anything at all…
I really hope I am wrong, for the sake of the waitstaff.
Wow, the free b-day grand slam is back! I’ll be there in Aug for sure. Thanks.
