Free icons for folders for a Mac

I’ve been enjoying the use of some free icons to replace the boring blue folder icons on my desktop and within some folders.

Coming up against a really annoying bit. Many of the finer ( less plain ) icons I find are available as PNG or ICN icons. Download what works better. In the case of the Mac ( OSX 10.6.8 ), I can download either.

No matter which choice I make, many of them download fine. I go through the procedure to overlay the new fancypants icon. But, when opening the icon using the " Get Info " choice to copy the icon, the actual icon appears in the Preview area in the column. However, I have to Copy the small version of the icon that appears at the very top, just to the left of the name of the icon.

Problem is this. For many of them, a universal icon is there that reads " PNG " if it’s a . PNG file. The actual icon does not appear up top, so I cannot copy and paste it and use it.

Is there a work-around? The boring childish icons appear as useable. It’s the more interesting ones- from the same free icon site that don’t usually have the smaller icon up top.

Help !?

I’m not sure I really understand, but…
You don’t need to copy and paste an icon - you only need an image.
So, if you can open your downloaded icons in something like Preview, you can copy the image, and paste it into the get-info icon field.

Son of a gun. Worked perfectly. Thanks !!!
One note. You cannot Copy something opened in Preview. You have to use the cursor to identify a field on the image shown in Preview, then Copy that.

No need to use Preview:

  1. Cmd-I to open the Get Info window for the folder.

  2. Find a picture you like in your web browser.

  3. Drag the picture directly from the browser window to the folder icon at the top left of the Get Info window.

Question: will that replace the folder entirely with the icon, or will it put the picture on the folder? I would want the latter.
