Free Money, People -- My Good Deed For Expedia.com Customers (Act Soon!)

So Expedia got sued for charging customers tax/service fees that may not actually have been incurred. Apparently they were pretty guilty of the allegations as there’s been a big settlement of the class action.

You might not know it, though, as the only notification I saw, I stumbled across in a junk mail folder. Could they have been so devious as to spamify their message in hopes that they could minimally comply with the court’s requirements but minimize the number of people who actually found out they had money coming to them? Who knows.

To be fair, they did auto-refund money to every class member’s Expedia account in the form of an electronic coupon for future travel. And, it’s not a trivial amount if you’ve used Expedia to any non-trivial extent over about the past eight years (I got several hundred dollars, but I’m on the high end of travellers). At the least it’s ten or twenty or a hundred dollars you didn’t know you had coming if you’ve got any purchase history to speak of with them.

Here’s how to do it: log into your Expedia account. Go to My Account. Scroll down to My Coupons (near the bottom), and you should see one. They expire next year, I think, so use it or lose it (I guess you’d use it by clicking Apply Coupon when you’re ready to pay for your next trip).

Enjoy and let me know if you get an enjoyable little windfall.

I just logged in because I’m pretty sure we’ve used Expedia sometime over the years, and it said I have no saved coupons. Ah well.

That’s very cool! We don’t have a coupon either, so I think we used Travelocity last time. But thanks for sharing, and hope it helps a lot of people!

We use Expedia constantly - I wouldn’t be surprised if we spend between 10 and 20 thousand dollars per year on travel through that site.

But it says we have no saved coupons. :frowning:

I’m not even sure what Expedia.com is, so I have no account. No free money for me. Or Zathros. Or Zathros.
Are they the ones with Captain Kirk?

Nope. That’s Priceline.

On further research, it looks like the coupons apply to hotel reservations only, not airfare. That explains why we don’t have any.

The Gnome, then?

yeah, woo hoo, wow, [fireworks] ///*[fireworks] I got a coupon for . . . . $1.35.

I got $1.19 !
Still, some people might get more. Thanks Huerta.

Wow! Almost four bucks!

I got bubkus. Bubcus? Bupcus? Nada, anyway.

Wowee! I got a coupon for $43.24!!!

Yeah, I’ve used Expedia a lot in the past few years.

I got $62! Sweet! Thanks for the heads-up!

Good point – the taxes/local tourism recoupment fees they were phantom-charging (in some cases) applied only to hotels (and I thought car rental agencies but maybe I am wrong).

Apparantly, I opted for a cash payment in the Class Action suit.

Now, where shall I spend this $2.59.

$3.01! w00t!

I think the email said I got $0.94. Not sure where I’m going to go on vacation now.

$10.31…that’s enough for something from the mini-bar!

Travelocity.

Expedia is the one where they sing, “Dot Com!” after the Expedia. Annoying as shit. I can’t get it out of my head for hours afterward.
