heh i dont know if anyone gets Game Informer but apparently, its an extra 20 a year to get the Dead Tree version and they really want you to it seems since I was sent something akin to a Wikipedia donation plea since our scrip is up …
I would compare the optional subscription to be similar to Elder Scrolls Online where, as you note, you get unlimited storage of crafting materials and other QoL perks, plus roughly $15 equivalent of in-game currency.
I’ve subscribed to both, but I likely won’t rejoin without a subscription, hence my “too good to be true” question on the Prime deal also including the subscription, which would be worth Prime all on its own.
I play ESO on my Xbox. I was actually a beta tester for that game originally when it was being made for the PC, as I was a big Elder Scrolls fan going all the way back to Daggerfall. When I first started playing the game it was subscription-only, and I had lost interest long before it went F2P. I only later took it up on the Xbox because I was looking for a decent MMO that I could play on my console.
I have played it for quite some time now (a couple years at least I’m sure) without a subscription and it works great. The lack of space for crafting materials isn’t a big deal for me, as I don’t do a ton of crafting (the only one I’ve bothered to max out is Alchemy, mostly for the really nice passive bonuses) and every once in a while I’ll spend a bit of cash to buy a DLC when the DLC and/or premium coins (Crowns) go on sale. It’s easily the best F2P MMO that I’ve played on the Xbox.
If Fallout 76 is as forgiving to non-subscribers as ESO, then that’s pretty good and I don’t think someone should be discouraged by the optional subscription. I’ve played plenty of F2P online games that are practically unplayable without a subscription but not all are like that.
I picked up 76 a few years ago and never really did anything with it. Feels too much like a pale imitation of Bethesda’s Fallout universe, as if Asylum got into the videogame market.
NB: I don’t subscribe. Never have, never will.

Orcs Must Die was a fun game. I never tried any of the sequels though.

Epic also has a free add-on for the Firestone RPG:
The Firestone RPG base game is free (this is not a weekly freebie, it is always free), but does have in-game purchases:
that one seems intriguing …
Diablo IV is free to play until May 21 to celebrate a new season, tagline Loot Reborn! All the loot from the last trial is now marked ‘legacy’, meaning they can’t be used for tempering or master work, whatever that means.
Epic’s freebie for this week is Dragon Age: Inquisition – Game of the Year Edition
Gotta get the hype out for Dragon Age: Dread Wolf later this year.
Ooh, I played that on PS4 when it first launched, hitting the GOTY edition on PC would be a great way to revisit it.
