Free PC game and free weekend notification thread

Of course, EGS still isn’t profitable and is surviving off Fortnite money and PC gamers are still paying the same price tiers for video games – for example the Epic-Exclusive Saints Row reboot was $60 at launch same as other AAA releases.

Epic has sizable investors (Tencent, Sony, Kirkbi/Lego, Disney, etc) and the primary purpose of the EGS is to make money for those investors. During the Epic v Apple trial, the Epic folks testified that they still weren’t making a profit off the store yet and the current goal was “growth”. Hence the continued weekly free games, albeit somewhat diminished in stature from the original free offerings at EGS’s launch. If you can say you got a million new accounts made, you can claim “growth” and “engagement” even if those people haven’t bought anything.

Maybe it was a mistake to say consumer-friendly instead of only developer-friendly, but I must concede your point.

Intravenous is free until (I assume) noon CST tomorrow. Says for 24 hours and that’s the usual changeover time.

Just a ping that these are now available for Amazon Prime members

[Edit: I thought one click activated all three but think I just already had Tomb Raider and Chivalry activated from previous giveaways]

I definitely had the Tomb Raider collection from a previous giveaway.

Not Chivalry but I don’t care for those games, that was a choice.

Today on Epic:

Arcade Paradise

Maid of Sker

I’ve never heard of this game, but it’s free now.

I believe in truth in advertising but is it wise to post reviews that’s trashing your game? I looked at the review blurbs (they’re at the bottom of the page) of Maid of sker and wow if they’re right no wonder this game is free …

Huh, I wonder if it got patched after the initial reviews. On Steam, it has a “Mostly Positive” for recent reviews and “Very Positive” overall.

On GOG:

Fallout: London

A quick warning though for Fallout London, is that according to most sources, it requires back-leveling your copy of Fallout 4, as it’s not fully compatible with the last big update. Second, it more or less rebuilds the game, so if you end up uninstalling it later, you’ll need a full reinstall of F4.

I’m looking forward to it, but think I’ll give it 4-6 months just for fixes, to make sure certain “must have for me” mods will be compatible, and the like.

Hmm… so they plan to charge for this Fallout 4 mod outside of this period on GoG? I thought that’d be pretty illegal because you’re making money using someone else’s product as a base without any authorization. I’ve never seen a paid mod like that. There are games that have paid content by third parties like MS flight sim 2020 or DCS world, but I’m sure they have a licensed arrangement to do it.

Wait, what? I thought the plan was permanently free.

My mistake. A comment I saw on reddit implied it was only temporarily free. Disregard.

All I know is that, when I went to get it, it said that it was only on Giveaway until August 1.

Cool, I claimed it, then. I’d be curious to read in-depth reviews. How big a game is it?

Today on Epic:

F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch

Olympics™ GO! Paris 2024 - Exclusive Outfits Pack (Base Game Required)

It should be big, the creators claim it’s as big as a full DLC would be. They had hundreds of people working on it.

And some info on getting it to work:

Couple friends opted to just buy the GOG version of FO4 for ease of installing London rather than mess with their Steam installs. I’m inclined to do so myself but figure I’ll wait a few days to see if there’s stories about the mod being life-changing or most overhyped terrible thing ever.

That does seem like the safest play. And I guess it can’t hurt to pick it up for free on GOG whether you install it or not.

EDIT: Though, of course, you would need the base game on GOG as well.
