Free posting, one-time posters, and socks?

I’m curious about something:
Once upon a time, probably 5 years ago, my little brother registered a name and posted just once about something videogame related. I don’t recall what the name was, and I’m sure he doesn’t either at this point. I’m also sure there are other people out there who posted just once or twice a long while ago but might be lured back when the board becomes free again. Especially people who only posted a bit right before the boards went pay.

Are they expected to figure out what they used as a screename to make a handful of posts years ago or be in trouble for creating socks when they register new names? I’d love to get my brother to consider the boards again, but not if he’ll get in trouble when he most likely fails to recall what the once used name was.

What should be SOP for people who want to return but no longer have a clue what their old long since unused screennames were?

Contact a mod. I mean, it’s what they live for on those lonely Saturday nights.

It would be nice if people remembered who they used to be – and if that memory returns to them after they’re reregistered we’ll deal with it – we don’t foresee this being a problem.

We tend to give people the benefit of the doubt on this sort of thing – it’s only when we have someone who obviously has serial registrations or someone who has been banned that returns, that’s when we get medieval. So your brother has nothing to worry about.

If he wants the old name and can’t remember it, just push Login and then follow the instructions for "Forgotten your password? Click here!

Which assumes he uses the same email address now as before; a dodgy assumption for many.
