Freedom Fries guy changes mind, opposes war. What does this mean for liberals?

Christ on a cracker–an effing wheat thin at that. What do property rights have to do with affirmative action? This ain’t Rhodesia-noone is gonna make him give up his farm to a black man or whatever.

I have sincerely tried to make sense of this thread and am coming up empty.

Toodles.

You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar is a useful apothegm.

Calling people stupid for not coming to the same conclusions as you is more likely to alienate them to where they will feel justified in acting to achieve goals opposite your own can be an important truism to keep in mind when you’re stumping for your candidate/cause.

“a thousand screeching Kennedys”, is a sure-fire attention getter.

OTOH, not all attention is good in terms of arriving at the desired outcome. As a keynote, “a thousand screeching Kennedys” (however vivid and evocative it may be in establishing a background against which to cast Rep. FreedomFries’s current position), it sets the stage for defensiveness, combativeness, and resentment to dominate the tone of the enusing conversation.

Yes, Lib, the Democrats, liberals, progressives, and other assorted America-hatin’ leftists could benefit by taking to heart the first two of my paragraphs above.

And it strikes me that you could profit from all three.

Hey you asked a question, I answered it. You don’t have to get all snippy about it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Cassini finds possible cryo-volcanos on Titan. What does this mean for liberals?

Tobey McGuire in negotiation to star in romantic comedy. Did screeching liberals put him up to it?

Study: Calcium-rich diets reduce PMS symptoms. Liberals hate freedom.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith tops at box office. When will liberals stop opening my mail?

Pink Floyd to reunite for Live8. I’ve never waivered in my staunch support of a strong central government, charged with securing the rights and property of its citizens.

Oil tops $55. Liberal confiscation of my God-given income to blame?

Mars rover Opportunity works free of sand dune. Why did liberals put it there?

Look at this cute dog. Why do liberals like it better than me?

Mind if I take a stab at this? I think that there are several points worth making, both specifically in this thread as well as on a more overview level.

First, this thread basically seems to be placing the blame for the Iraq war at the feet of the Liberals (understand, not as you define the term but what that term has come to mean). This, as far as I can tell, is what is so ill received.

See, a lot of us self-identify as Liberals. From before this war, we were protesting, writing letters, posting here and basically doing everything that we could think of to point out in as many ways as we could that this was a terrible idea.

For this, we were dismissed, mocked and our patriotism was questioned. Well, as it turns out, we were right. There is no comfort in that, and to be honest I was kind of hoping to be wrong all along because the price of being right in this case in terms of human misery, damage to the environment, to say nothing of our standing in the world and actual money spent is staggering.

So to have you come along and state that this can somehow be laid at our feet is more than insulting. It seems cruel, hurtful and dismissive of all of the warnings that we tried to give beforehand.

At least in this thread, the ire that you are receiving has nothing to do with your political ideals. While I may find Libertarian political thought to be a bit loony, I am more than capable of talking about it without being upset. But that is not what happened in this thread. Hell, even if you had come along and stated something to the effect of “gee, it looks like the Liberals were right about Iraq, lets talk about how they could have gotten that message across to more people” you might not have takes as much grief.

On a big picture level, all that I can say is that you might want to consider your own advice and look at the way that you communicate. I do not pretend to state for a fact that this is what you are feeling, but when you post you tend to come of as condescending to everyone, as if you are stating your opinions as irrefutable facts, nitpicking when someone calls you on something and churlish when folks don’t agree with you. Even when you complement someone, it reads as if it is somehow a backhanded complement and as if there is an insult hidden therein.

I am going to state right here and now that I am not going to provide cites for any of that. I am speaking simply from my impressions after several years here.

Stop it, yer killin’ me !!

A couple of years ago, you and I had an exchange in which we professed mutual respect.

Since then, we have been silent on the subject. I hope that this silence on your part indicates that your respect for me has not diminished, because then perhaps you will listen to me when I tell you that the silence on my part reflects an ongoing, and lately accelerating, diminishment of my respect for you.

This thread is the final straw. Giraffe, Hentor, Guin, and now Binarydrone are right. You used to reliably offer an interestingly alternative point of view, but lately you’ve mixed up your philosophy with your overweening ego. And that makes me sad, for in my view it was not always so.

You have much work to do if you want to regain my respect. It’s your choice whether or not you think it’s important to do so.

Thank you, Binarydrone, for saying what I was trying to say, but not able to get across quite as well.

I doubt any one would, not matter how appealing the fantasy might monentarily be.

And my frustration was not aimed at you. But now that you mention it, you were answering for Liberal .
And now I find myself getting snippy for you calling me snippy when the snippiness wasn’t snipped at you. Pax.

And Bina --amen and hallelujah. You have a way with words.

What does this mean for liberals? It means that those liberals who oppose the war have another short-term ally on this one front. Nothing more, nothing less.

Enjoy,
Steven

You newbies are so cute. *Notice, I don’t use a smiley.

Cervaise. Since you registered before me, you’re not a newbie compared to me. I meant that your opinion which you expressed is newer than my opinion concerning the poster/OP.

Does that make sense?

If you’re saying you gave up on him long before I did, then yes, I think so.

I forgot this loose end. You can call me whatever you feel is necessary. You won’t see me crying about it. I’ll never pull out an official ruling from a moderator so ummmm you’re in big trouble and I won’t be your best friend anymore.

And so on.

And, by the way, I wouldn’t waste my screen name on an oh-so-clever usurpation of some other people’s political orientation.

I think that a fitting punishment for Walter Jones is that he be forever referred to as “the Freedom Fries guy” from now on.

Everyone likes to build castles in the sky. It’s human nature. But healthy folk don’t try to live in them.

I hear someone named Cohen is looking for you.

For some reason, these two observations made me think of this from Despair.com.

More likely someone named Geddy.
