Mind if I take a stab at this? I think that there are several points worth making, both specifically in this thread as well as on a more overview level.
First, this thread basically seems to be placing the blame for the Iraq war at the feet of the Liberals (understand, not as you define the term but what that term has come to mean). This, as far as I can tell, is what is so ill received.
See, a lot of us self-identify as Liberals. From before this war, we were protesting, writing letters, posting here and basically doing everything that we could think of to point out in as many ways as we could that this was a terrible idea.
For this, we were dismissed, mocked and our patriotism was questioned. Well, as it turns out, we were right. There is no comfort in that, and to be honest I was kind of hoping to be wrong all along because the price of being right in this case in terms of human misery, damage to the environment, to say nothing of our standing in the world and actual money spent is staggering.
So to have you come along and state that this can somehow be laid at our feet is more than insulting. It seems cruel, hurtful and dismissive of all of the warnings that we tried to give beforehand.
At least in this thread, the ire that you are receiving has nothing to do with your political ideals. While I may find Libertarian political thought to be a bit loony, I am more than capable of talking about it without being upset. But that is not what happened in this thread. Hell, even if you had come along and stated something to the effect of “gee, it looks like the Liberals were right about Iraq, lets talk about how they could have gotten that message across to more people” you might not have takes as much grief.
On a big picture level, all that I can say is that you might want to consider your own advice and look at the way that you communicate. I do not pretend to state for a fact that this is what you are feeling, but when you post you tend to come of as condescending to everyone, as if you are stating your opinions as irrefutable facts, nitpicking when someone calls you on something and churlish when folks don’t agree with you. Even when you complement someone, it reads as if it is somehow a backhanded complement and as if there is an insult hidden therein.
I am going to state right here and now that I am not going to provide cites for any of that. I am speaking simply from my impressions after several years here.
