French village finds messages from WWI-era US soldiers

Given that most Dopers are American, I thought [-20180312-[contenu]-1000314095180"]this France 24 article](http://www.france24.com/en/20180311-france-village-charmoy-wwi-war-us-soldiers-history?xtor=EPR-300-[Info) might be of interest.

Interesting. I wonder if it was just their way of saying they were there. Name and address seems like an odd graffiti.

Thanks for sharing.

Pretty cool. My grandfather was in that area. He brought home some silver spoons he found buried while digging trenches somewhere else. WWI was the biggest thing that ever happened to an 18 year old kid from nowhere in Kansas in 1918. He got his men behind enemy lines in the Argonne. Not sure how he was in charge of other men at that age. When he got them back safely he said they didn’t know whether to court-martial him or give him a medal. He talked about it the rest of his life.
