Friday the 13th and the U.S. Navy...

A Marine friend told me that the US Navy never (?) launched a ship, and it is their policy not to do so, on a Friday the 13th. Is that true and if so, why is that US policy?
Thanks.

Not true.

Here’s the myth, from About.com:

Hey, thanks alot for clearing that up. Never thought this Marine friend would be wrong in what he said. Done good, thanks again.

Well, at least one other site perpetuates that myth. Not saying I believe it, but the story had to come from somewhere.

Thanks. Now I’m really confused! Is it so? I know the government believes in the supernatual in other areas, but does the United States government refuse to launch a ship on Friday the 13th? What we need is a naval commandant to attest to the validity of this Truth/Rumor. Any help please?

The answer is a definitive no. I was a master helmsman for > 2 years.

I served in the U.S. Navy for 23 years. I was pretty familiar w/ naval history and traditions and I’ve never heard of this.

Guess it’s they do launch on those days. Thanks, folks.
