I may have asked this before.
Back in the sixties a friend and I drove to the east coast, mostly via rt 66. Had a blast.
Anyway, while passing through Louisiana (didn’t make New Orleans) we stopped at a cafe for some breakfast. I saw “fried pecan pie” on the menu, so I had to try it. I love good pecan pie, and I’d never heard of such a thing. The cook/waitress/hostess/etc lopped off a good hunk of some yummy pie, slathered it with butter, and flipped it over on the grill. She put one of those upside-down pie pan lid thingies fry cooks used to use, and pried us for stories about California.
Soon she took off the lid, scooped up my pie, and flipped it right side up on a plate. The pecans and sugar had caramelized and browned. the inside was warm. Add some whipped cream and it was divine. My mouth is watering from the memory.
Anyway, it seems nobody has ever heard of fried pecan pie. I did dabble some acid, and smoke quite a lot of pot back then, but I was not hallucinating.
Can anyone of the SDMB back me up on the existance of this delicious dessert?
Peace,
mangeorge
It wasn’t breaded then deep fried? By modern Southern sensibilities it doesn’t sound odd at all.
Okay, the downfall of pecan pie, otherwise as close to ambrosia as we mortals may encounter, is that the top layer of pecans can become dry. That preparation solves it.
The one I’m thinking of is of the half-moon fried-pie variety common among some of the older folks here in the South. They can be made with a variety of fillings, including pecan, are totally, 100% bad for you and divine.
Of course, what you describe sounds absolutely sinful too.
Search on “deep-fried pecan pie” and you’ll find a bunch of hits. We’ve discussed this business of deep-frying random things before. It’s well known at fish and chips shops in Scotland. It’s well known at fairs in the U.S. Do a search on “deep-fried Mars bars” and look at the hits.
Down here at the NC State Fair in the fall, if you can dream it, they can fry it. My wife and I split a slice of deep fried pecan pie last time. It was ok.
This was fried on a grill, not deep-fried. Must have been a local thing. It was on the menu along with all the regular stuff. I wish I could remember the town.
dropzone’sprobably right about the origin, although this slice was very fresh, and she took it right out of the pan where the rest of the pies were.
She also had poached egg dishes, including eggs benedict. I hear that kinda stuff is popular around there. Sure looked good, but we had to scoot.
BYW; it had the darker filling, not the lighter kind we see around here.
Kinda like this.
Only mine had whipped cream. Ice cream sounds good.
Drooool…
Huh? Oh, sorry for the mess. (Mops up thread)
I really didn’t need to learn about this!!
You can make the filling darker by using brown sugar and dark Karos syrup. I don’t care for the lighter filling myself and all of my homemade pecan pies are dark with a bit of good bourbon.
I have been meaning to do some baking lately and I think I going to make a pecan pie this weekend and try frying a slice and see how it goes. Sounds like a winning combination
Pecan pie is delicious. Fried Pecan pie must be nectar of the gods, ambrosia of the angels. Can’t wait until pecan season.
I always heard it as Sex in a Pan.
Considered this was Louisiana this might have been a health food restaurant. Pecan pie grilled in butter is their version of “heart healthy” food.
