Pecan Pie in Denver

Hey gang,
After 43 years of being told I’m allergic to nuts, I found out I’m very, extremely not allergic and have discovered the joys of pecans. I want to know if I’ll like pecan pie but I don’t want to make a full one mostly because I’d be the only one to eat it and I am trying to diet so I want to go into a place that make it and try a slice. I don’t want to go into a place that claims they do good pies but really don’t so I’m turning to the Dope for help. Where is the best pecan pie from Denver to Cheyenne? And yes, if you make a great pecan pie AND have verification from non-family members that it is good then I am willing to have you make a slice for me.

I can’t help you with finding a slice of pie, but people like my pecan pie. I copied this recipe from somewhere:

Note that the recipe calls for ‘roasted’ pecans. As it happens, the C&P I did of the recipe contains a link on how to ‘roast’ your pecans in the microwave oven.

ETA: Link to the recipe I copied (with pics).

.

I found a recipe that I’m going to try if I like it but I don’t want to make a whole pie quite yet, jet try a slice to see if I like it.

I’ve always had good results following the recipe straight off of a bottle of Karo syrup. Very easy recipe.

OK let’s try this a third time.
I DO NOT WANT A RECIPE!
I want a RESTAURANT that serves damn good pecan pie.
or if you are near Denver and make good pecan pie and have an extra slice I am willing to eat that.

Since it’s possible that you’ll like pecan pie, and since it’s unlikely that someone is going to bring you a slice, you may eventually have to make it yourself. You don’t have to eat the whole thing.

The Convenience stores around here have single serving pecan pies as an impulse item.

Not the same as a homemade pecan pie, but they will give you an idea of the taste.

They are a reasonable facsimile, IMO. I can’t seem spot anything when I google it though.

Please don’t cuss me out. I am not from Denver so I can’t help you. If you have Waffle House, I think one of their desserts is Pecan pie. Never had it there.

OKAY. I WILL MAKE IT EASY FOR YOU.*

A pecan pie is about the easiest pie you can make and not screw up. I should know, I don’t bake and I’ve made a few myself.

In a pecan pie, what you are basically tasting is the crust (store made is fine), the sugary filling (it’s sugar and more sugar and some buttery stuff–so SUGAR), and pecans. (Expensive as hell but nice tasting.)

Get a slice out of the freezer section at the grocery store. Warm it. Try it.

If you think, ‘hmmm that’s tasty!’ then go for a restaurant version.

Which is the same basic recipe at about 5x the price.
*Sorry I yelled, but you were kinda yelly.

Go to grocery store–buy Marie Callender frozen pecan pie. Very good commercial pie. Enjoy/ Throw out the remainder if you don’t like.

The best place in Denver for pecan pie is going to be Luciel’s I’m not sure where you live but there is one in the Wash park area and one down in Littleton. Honestly, I only go there for breakfast but it’s great Cajun food.

I googled ‘pie stores in Denver’ and this was the first hit. They even deliver!

Go to a big grocery store and buy a frozen one or see if their bakery sells them or will make you one. I overheard a man asking for some type of cookie at my local grocery bakery and the lady said they don’t have any but if he’d wait a day or two she would bake some up.

Or

Go to a Dennys like restuarant. I googled it and there are three Dennys in Denver but their website does not list pecan pie as a dessert.

I aslo googled CoCos and Marie Callanders but they don’t have locations in Denver. So go to a restuarant/bakery similar to those and Dennys.

Speaking of bakery. Call up some bakery shops around Denver and ask if they make pecan pies and if so I bet you can get just a slice from them. Also if they don’t usually make them they might make one for you since the ingredients are common ones in baked goods.

Also, I’m kind of curious how it came to be that you thought you had a nut allergy for 43 years and how you found out you actually didn’t.

Did you just have an allergic reaction and the doctor asked what last you ate and you said peanuts or something?

This. I’ve tried, but I can’t make a better one.

Not a pie person, but I’d be willing to endorse Lucille’s sight unseen. I’ve been to the original in Boulder many times for breakfast and for Louisiana cooking, you can’t beat it around here.

OK, no offense meant, but do all of you live in a mall or a place that bans independent bakeries? A convenience store? Frozen pie from the store? Marie Callender’s or CoCo’s?

If you ask someone in your town where to get a good cup of coffee, do they say “We got this little place called McDonald’s, it’s got an upside down yellow “W” on the lawn, and their coffee is the best! Free refills, too! And the best apple pie you’ve ever tasted!”

When you ask for the best burrito, do they direct you to 7-11 and say “The one with the green wrapper is best - just leave the plastic on and nuke it for 45 seconds and Yuu-umm!” That stuff at Circle-K sucks in comparison."

C’mon, any half decent independent bakery or local breakfast joint will have something twice as tasty as something pre-made and shipped off to some chain’s 100 retail outlets.

Lucile’s–I have only been there for breakfast and I don’t recall seeing pecan pie on the menu, but then, I didn’t look.

I have been told I make great pecan pie. However, I don’t like it (not mine or anybody’s) so I don’t eat even my own. So far be it from me to tell you whether something is good. BUT. Village Inn often has pecan pies, and VI has a fairly good reputation for pies, so…

You might have to wait a couple of months. I think it’s seasonal.

Does CoCos have an upside down yellow W?

I think not.

Checkmate.

The commercially made pecan pies I’ve seen are mostly gelatinous sugar glop with a single layer of pecans on top. NO!

Pecan pie is only worth having if you make it like my aunt: pecans from top to bottom. If you have to buy a bag of pecans from the store, you’re already doing it wrong. Go down south, where pecans litter the highways like acorns. My family in Arkansas is always offloading a fifty pound sack of pecans to whoever will take them.

I was a judge at the national pie championships… Day 1, I was on the Pecan pie commercial baking category. I sampled 17 different pecan pies. It was very easy to tell which pies followed certain base recipes but ultimately, unless they REALLY messed up (You make a chocolate pecan and chose Hershey’s syrup for the chocolate, seriously?) These store or restaurant Pecan pies all kind of tasted the same but mouth feel played a big part of enjoyment factor.

If I go to my local store here in Ohio and buy pecans, they came from the South. Certainly cheaper than driving 500 miles to buy pecans.
