What would you call someone from Lahore?
Those aren’t equivalent terms. There are many rednecks who are not Southerners. There are many Southerners who are not rednecks.
I’m a born and bred Mancunian, and I’m happy with that label, if I’m going to have to wear at least one.
I’m an Arkansan. I’ve never heard of Arkansawyer, but I like that better. It just uses the old respelling of Arkansaw, and keeps the stress the same as the root word, so you don’t get people thinking it’s pronounced Ar-Kansas.
Incidentally, as of 10 years ago, there was apparently still a law on the books that forbade mispronouncing the name of the state. Or, at least, according to a silly laws book I read (and we know how accurate those are.)
Us Mancunians have another name for you, related to the male Loiner’s preferred form of sexual activity.
Protip: It’s easier to shag a sheep if you are wearing a loin-cloth.
Allegedly.
I’m from Galway, Ireland.
So I’m a Galwegian.
I am a Newfoundlander (New fun LAND er, not New FOUND lund er, damned Ontarians).
Or a Newfie, but be careful how you say that one, or I may just have to kick your arse.
Or a Newf. (‘A Newf?’ ‘I got better!’)
I keep thinking Mancunian would be a good name for a small fuzzy animal, likely with rounded ears. This deeply annoys my friend’s boyfriend, who is Mancunian!
I live in Connecticut, but generally consider myself to be a displaced Texan.
Anyway, “Connecticutian” sounds a bit odd (much less “Connecticution” (sic), which sounds like it would rhyme with “allocution”). I’ve heard “nutmegger” much more frequently.
No question those to the north of us are “Massholes,” but generally just the ones you run into (no pun intended) on the highway.
Californian.
As a female from the Los Angeles vicinity, I am properly an Angelena. However, that sounds like a name, so I generally use Angeleno.
I like that we’re the only U.S. place-people-name that comes directly from a non-English language (that I know of!)
People not from South Carolina refer to people from South Carolina as South Carolinians.
Natives of South Carolina (a good many of us, anyway) refer to ourselves as Sandlappers.
I’m from Glasgow, so I am a Glaswegian, or “weegie” for short.
Speak for yourself. :o
I’m from Tucson. I’m a Too Stoned-an.
NC native = North Carolinian. Prefer not to be called a Tarheel as I’m not a UNC-CH fan.
Former resident of Phoenix, so I am an ex-Phoenician.
Currently living in Manassas, VA. Thank goodness it’s not on 234 between there and Dumfries or I’d be a Dumass.
New Jerseyan here.
I recall an episode of Taxi, where Jim Ignatowski was addicted to watching TV. He was watching the Delaware State Legislature discuss whether residents should be referred to as “Delawareans” or Delawarites". Jim said, “I’m leaning towards ‘Delaweenies’ myself.”
Hmm - the American states are easy: Floridian, Georgian and Californian. I don’t really know what people from the cities are called (Pompano Beach, Atlanta, Sacramento).
In South Africa I was a Capetonian but I don’t know what people from the Western Cape province are called.
Originally from the south end of nowhere down where Illinois and Missouri join up. Closest town was Steeleville, so I guess that would be a Steelevillain. Pretty much everyone there is just a redneck or a hillbilly, with a whole lot of German Mennonite mixed in.
