From the "Terrorists Are Winning" Dept...

Chicago’s been sort of out of control with paranoia for the past two days…evacuating buildings, closing down the subway, closing down the post office. And I think it’s important to err on the side of caution with some things.

But I DO have to say that when the “mysterious dried green substance” in the Western Suburbs turned out to be guacamole*…

We’ve gone off the deep end.

*[sub]and I hope some other ChiDoper can provide a cite for that story, since I only heard it on the news[/sub]

… and, in Rockville, Maryland, all newspaper boxes have been removed summarily from the Grosvenor Metro Station.

Jess, I’m glad you are feeling better enough to start finding the dark humor in the present situation. Do you think Dan Rather is jealous that no anthrax has been found in HIS mail?

Tell me about it, for weeks the Times Square station has made me nervous with all the police crawling all over it. And now today, I’m like “where are the police? how am I supposed to feel safe without the police?”

And is this a bad time for me to send out my sample packets of cocaine?

Is New York City the only place that still clings to some semblance of normalcy?

I’ve figured out the solution to the terrorist situation. First, we give John Gotti full immunity, and a release and pardon from prison. Then, we give him, say, $20 mil to distribute amongst his “associates” in any way that he sees fit for them to find Osama Bin Laden, and turn him over to Judge Judy. Then, once he’s convicted, he’ll have to sit in a cell with nothing but reruns of Joe Piscopo movies, the last episode of Seinfeld on continuous loop, and baseball games featuring the Montreal Expos and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Uh Huh !
I know this contributes nothing to the discussion but yep that feeling is not uncommon round these parts.

Uh Huh!
Reminds me of the transparent refuse bins in Paris central.

Im not trying to belittle any of the sentiments expressed when I say that these things have been commonplace for a lot of people for quite some time. I know I am not alone in having at some stage having felt an irrational paranoid panic due to fear of some idiot with a grudge.

Like superstition its one of those annoying things that
you eventually just learn to accomodate but still make minor alterations in your actions to placate the niggling fears. For the same reason you may not walk under a ladder you might avoid the metro on days of religious significance.

Its a crying shame that people cant lead their lives without having to feel these things but what can be done ?
There is no going back to blythe innocence now.

Shit…Avon does eyeliner AND coke these days?

The garbage cans and recycling bins have been removed (presumably forever) from all Washington Metro stations. So now if I need to blow my nose, I’ll just have to toss the used tissue on the track. :stuck_out_tongue:

That was meant to be a “sticking-out-my-tongue” smiley, obviously.
