Talerico’s victory speech sure sounded like the start of a presidential campaign to me, too.
Pennsylvania is pretty critical, so I wonder if they should just nominate their governor.
I think Ossoff is pretty clearly the candidate whose position improved most last night. Even in a very blue year, the magnitude of his win was impressive.
More importantly the election of a Democratic governor means he won’t be surrendering a vital “purple” seat to run. He has said he won’t, but everything just came up Ossoff if he decides to change his mind and the above bit of news makes it far easier for him to sell a change of heart.
I’m not sure Georgia even counts as purple anymore.
The Atlanta metro area isn’t getting any smaller. I realize a lot of its suburbs are red, but a lot of them are mixed and many are blue, too.
See also the various large metro areas in Texas.
Last five presidential cycles it has gone McCain, Romney, Trump, Biden (by a quarter percent, the smallest margin of any of these), Trump. It’s definitely not blue. Not yet.
Yeah, that was my one argument against Ossoff. I think he’s just jumped to the top of the list. He’s still not a guarantee, but only because someone even better might emerge. That’s not a bad place for a political party to be.
As noted elsewhere, yesterday was a repudiation of naked kleptocracy, traitorism, and senility.
It was not a repudiation of RW values, normal or Fascist. Nor will it slow foreign botnets and RW fantasy-based TV.
Do not misread the room.
It was Inflation and a stupid war- which caused part of the war.
That’s a full six year term for Ossoff, correct? Then isn’t there very little downside to him running even if he doesn’t win?
After consideration, my theory of the race has changed.
This election was basically a referendum on Trump. The 2028 election will also be a referendum on Trump, even though he won’t be on the ballot. Therefore, although obviously a lot can change in two years and our strategy will need to be flexible, the default assumption right now should be that we’ll probably pick up another half dozen or so Senate seats in exotic locations and get close to 400 electoral votes. He’s not going to get any more popular and neither is his war. The relevant precedent is 2006, when a massive midterm Democratic win was followed by another landslide in 2008.
So screw it, we have a free pass, we don’t need to agonize over who will be slightly more appealing to swing voters. We can just run AOC/Talarico.
