Following Newsom’s forcing of the issue, the donors with substantial influence on the normal wing of the Democratic Party are starting to get more direct about whether they want to set two billion dollars on fire nominating a proven loser to babble her way through another incompetent campaign and make JD Vance president for eight years. The answer is: no, they do not. I think this is the end for Box Wine Kamala. All the little indy fundraising is going to go to whoever Sanders anoints as this cycle’s left-wing saboteur; the real Democratic candidate can’t emerge without the support of the megadonors, or at least not if they are actively hostile.
I like Kelly a lot. He’s smart, well-spoken, with great credentials as you note, and he has been very verbal and visible in opposing Trump and the administration’s policies – including participating in that video reminding servicemembers that they do not need to follow unlawful orders, which led to Trump targeting him and the others with charges of treason, and attempting to get him court-martialed.
When Kelly was on Harris’s short list for VP nominees two years ago, I’d hoped that he would have been the choice.
I did too for a while until I heard him speak. Two years ago listening to him wasn’t much better than listening to paint dry. Hopefully if he wants this, he’s worked on his public speaking.
I love the guy on paper, not so much IRL.
The donors’ trepidation precedes Newsome’s trying to force the issue. (Your link is behind a wall btw.) And FWIW it is hard to not knee jerk ignore your post with the stupid Box Wine crap, but despite that the point may be valid.

Re Kelly - hard to see a path for him winning a crowded field starting out in South Carolina. He’d be on anyone’s short list for VP though. Or should be.

I don’t get the hate for Harris. I like her. She’s not my top choice, but I have no issues with her or how she ran her campaign.

Same thing here. In fact I have no big issues with voting for any of the top Dem possibles. Yeah, i have said i want more experience for Mayor Pete and AOC, but still I will not cross them off.
The article I linked to expressed it well I think. It’s not a dislike for many of us, it is just a sense she is not a best candidate.

She would have been a great president I think. But she is not a great candidate. There are other possible nominees who could also be great presidents, and who have more potential as candidates.
In Kelly’s 2020 Senate race, he ran two points ahead of Trump in the purple state of Arizona. So a lot of voters apparently feel his public speaking is good enough. Now, if you said you would vote against him in November 2028 for being boring to listen to, then I might get a little worried 
As I said long ago in this thread, I first of all think that past electoral performance in tough general election races against MAGA opponents is the best test of who will be a strong nominee. Kelly passes that test. A smaller factor is that I think he matches up well against his most likely general election opponent, JD Vance, by having a more impressive military record. Real military pilot against military journalist sounds good to me. But it doesn’t really matter how it sounds to me, only how it sounds to swing/uncertain voters.
I also have no issues with her and might even favor her nomination – except that we have other great choices who are proven swing (or red) state vote getters when they faced MAGA opponents. I think we have an usually strong Democratic Party bench for 2028 and can be pickier than usual in terms of looking for evidence of electability.
That’s the main reason why I don’t favour Kamala as a winning candidate – in those states, I don’t see voters having changed their stance on Kamala over these recent years – a trend that could continue to 2028.

Several of us would not like to see her run again. That’s hardly hate.
I should have added, as PhillyGuy stated, there’s a very strong Dem roster for 2028, and I worry that with such a strong field, “pickiness” might result in a 11:59th-hour candidate.
I do resent some of the “winebox Kamala” talk. I truly don’t know what she did wrong, she jumped on a live grenade after Biden dropped out. Like if she doesn’t put her soul into the hundred odd days of campaigning, Dems probably lose senate seats in Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin, and Arizona, and they certainly don’t gain seats in the house.
I like Kamala and I feel she would have made a fine president. Most importantly, she would have carried on Biden’s considerable work, for which he is underappreciated. If she is the nominee, I will vote for her and be fine with it.
However, there is a staleness to her candidacy that’s hard to shake. It’s not merited, it’s not fair. But it’s there. An ever-present reminder of the painful loss to Trump in 2024. An undercurrent of nervousness: Could it happen again?
Voters, rightly or wrongly, will be much more enthused for a fresh face.
I’ve flogged Kelly from the outset. I perceive he scares Trump and his cabal the most, because of his genuine hero status, his outspoken disdain for Trump, his military service, his sympathetic spouse and his crossover appeal. He could deliver Arizona – not an inconsiderable asset. For all these reasons and others, he remains at the top of my list.
But as I’ve said, I’ll vote for any Democrat over any Republican in every election, so my vote is completely secure for 2028.
