Frozen Drink Methodology

We just acquired a smoothie maker. I thought I could make frozen pina coladas and organge julius type drinks, but all I get is very cold drinks, not a bit of the ice bits left in the drink. What do I need?

Also what is best for crushing ice? This smoothie maker seems to beat up the ice cubes until they melt a bit, but doesn’t actually make anything resembling crushed ice.

How much ice do you use? The way I do it is to put in about eight cubes, then the various fruits, then just enough liquid to cover the frozen stuff. Too much liquid will make your drinks, well, too liquidy.
