I love fruit. I love veggies. I prefer all fruit and most veggies raw.
My problem is my teeth. I can usually eat one carrot or one celery stalk before my teeth (on the left side) are way to sore to chew. I can’t chew them on the right because a missing molar makes grinding very difficult.
I don’t want to stop eating my roughage. But, I’m sick of having my teeth hurt.
I have a blender. I wont buy a juicer. I don’t see the point in a juicer. Even the best of them will subtract a fair amount of pulp. I like pulp. I also want the skin and juicers take way too much of the skin.
My problem is a complete and total lack of imagination. I would mix celery and cukes and carrots. I’d mix pretty much any fruit.
I want more options. I don’t know what goes well with what.
I also like beans. Can beans be added to juice without totally screwing with the flavor/texture? I absolutely love chick peas but when I think of blending them, I think of hummus and I don’t want my juice to taste like hummus.
So, please give me your favorites! Leave out no fruit or veggie. I am willing to try any of them. I will even consider giving beets a try. Oh, wait, I will not use any kind of fungus unless you can unconditionally promise me I wont taste it or feel it.
Also, how long can fresh fruit/veggie juice be kept in the fridge? Is there a particularly good container for storing it?
I do still plan on occasionally chewing my fruit and veggies but I’d still like to start drinking it.
My check this week is late so I wont be going grocery shopping for a day or two. Hit me with it!!
Isn’t most of the flavor from hummus from the tahini and garlic? Chickpeas themselves are just a mild nutty flavor that I think would go really well with something sweet, like having a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. But it would also get along with carrots, which are themselves pretty darn sweet. Of course they would be thicker, so I think adding something really watery, like cucumber or melon or celery, would help keep the drink pourable.
Just a WAG, glass jars or bottles with tight-fitting lids would probably be best for storage. I wouldn’t keep them for more than a few days, but again, that’s just a guess.
You are correct about the hummus. I meant texture. Hummus is good with that texture, drinks - not so much. But now you’ve got me thinking about chick peas and carrots and that does actually sound really good.
I know this isn’t what you asked for, but it isn’t normal for celery to hurt your teeth like that. If you haven’t already seen a dentist, you should get it checked out.
ETA - now those candied peanuts, on the other hand…
I have teeth issues. I have been to dentists. Sadly, I live in an area where dental insurance seems to be nearly unheard of. I will get them taken care of. Until I can afford it, I will continue brushing, flossing, and using ACT. Maybe I can keep them from getting worse.
Celery isn’t a major issue for me. Carrots, on the other hand, are bad. Really bad.
2 lemons
2 limes
2 oranges
1 teaspoon mazaher
1/2 cucumber, unpeeled
1 Wedge of Watermelon, no rind
1/2 cup fresh fava beans (shucked and membranous skin removed)
1 clove garlic
1 tiny chile pepper
5 cups of water
About a 1/2 cup sugar
(optional: several shots of raki)
Peel the lemons limes and oranges, save about a tablespoon of peel from each, and julienne. Add everything together in the blender with some ice and puree fine.
Serve in a tall glass with more ice, either strained or unstrained… up to you. Sprinkle some salt in, if you so wish. Garnish with an orange wedge.
devilsknew, that sounds awesome. Mazaher is orange blossom water, right? (I Googled but only skimmed the results.)
Do you think gazpacho-juice be good? Basically gazpacho but blended all the way smooth? I’d drink it. I’d also drink cucumber-dill-and-yogurt as a drink, though, so I might not be the best source on this.
Yes, mazaher is exactly that. I should have also mentioned that raki is either must distillate, or a homebrewed ouzo that packs a punch. That cocktail should ideally have a bit of the anise flavored ouzo to complete. It will taste good without, but much better with. Just the hint.
I can see blenderizing any gazpacho. Delicious… make a gazpacho gus, with some vodka. Any cold borscht would also work well for blenderizing- With Vodka, a Bloody Anastasia.
This sounds really good. I just got my sister to try Indian food on Thursday. She loved the Mango Lassi I ordered her and agreed that nothing works quite as well for soothing the mouth after eating spicy food.
I love V8. I’m more looking for homemade drinks though, because they’re less expensive and because of the lack of crap added to them.
I get my fruit and veggies from Sam’s club because they come in much larger quantities, they’re less expensive and they’re usually much better tasting. The fruit is also much bigger for some reason. Today, I got grapes and blackberries longer than my thumb! I’ve never seen them so large.
I currently have celery, cukes, lettuce, tomatoes, grapes (green and red), strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries.
I’ve discovered that the main reason teeth hurt is their supporting ligaments get sore.
And one way that happens is that something gets caught in the gum line and the irritation makes the gum swell and press on the ligaments. In my case it’s usually from things like popcorn or corn on the cob, or freshly shelled peanuts, or celery striings, where something is caught in the gum or between teeth.
The solution was to floss promptly and follow with a swig of hydrogen peroxide. Or medicinal whiskey, like a quarter shot. I suppose alcohol mouthwash would do but I hate the taste of mint or listerine.
Anyway, after one treatment my teeth are less sore, and after three they are back to normal.
I rinse with Hydrogen peroxide upon discovering it to be the prime ingredient in an expensive rinse a dentist gave me. I’m sure a “swig” doesn’t constitute swallowing, though.
When people serve gazpacho as a soup, they sometimes serve a variety of toppings to sprinkle on it. Sometimes chickpeas are one of those toppings. So that might be an option, if you keep it soup consistency. It’s still a drinkable soup.
There is always the Bhang Lassi, if you like that. Just swap out fruit and veggies… the berries that you have, mixed with some yogurt, pineapple, and a hint of fresh ginger would be nice. Simply mix with a bit of ice when blenderizing… Maybe some ground cinnamon and cardamom to garnish.
