Fuck CNN. And, while we're at it, Fuck the BBC

I get it. Nothing is free. Yet, having to endure relentless video and still ads SHOULD have been enough. But no.

CNN allows a tiny number of “free” articles per month, then I have no access. Or I have to pay to subscribe. Always loved the BBC, which is not so Ameri-centric, and had unlimited access.

Until recently. Now, pay pay pay.

So fuck both of them.

Anyone have a free comparable worldwide news resource I can find online?

Fine, fine, gimme the ads. But let me have free access. Wasn’t that the whole IDEA of suffering with the ads ???

Try these. High on facts, and because they supply other news organizations with diverse viewpoints, that can’t be too biased in their own reporting.

Thank you. I’m embarrassed. As the son of a newspaperman, I should have thought of AP and UPI first off.

Will look and also look for apps for my Android device.

France 24, Reuters, Deutsche Welle (German) and sometimes TVP World (Polish).

And Reddit.

I used to go to Reuters for all of my international news.
Then, at some point, the app decided not to work on my phone.
Sad, that.
Removed app, upgrades on the Android, blah blah. No Reuters love.

Will check out France24 though !!

I’ve got the AP app on my Android. It’s not immediately intuitive, but play around with it enough, and you’ll get the hang of it.

Try CBC and CTV.

I read these guys mostly.

https://www.euronews.com/

It’s a cross-border multi-country news consortium that was started in the wake of CNN’s original success. They do good work.

NPR is another possibility:

https://www.npr.org/

Reuters in my experience requires payment for some articles. AP and The Guardian beg for money.

My go-to for general news is the ABC news website. “Free” for now with the possible exception of a few features. For local and some international news, TV station sites are generally free.

I don’t mind paying in some cases (we have online subscriptions to three newspapers), but shelling out for stories on CNN? Not going to happen.

Will NPR go down the tubes thanks to recent budget cuts?

Too many people welching on their end of the deal. All the people with ad blockers are making free to view impossible.

Likely so.

In the case of the sites for local U.S. TV stations and newspapers, it likely doesn’t help that those sites are infamous for having their sites packed with spammy, bandwidth-hogging, screen-takeover, hard-to-skip-out-of ads.

OP maybe you need a different browser. Brave eliminates ads even on Youtube without installing anything.

Neither BBC or CNN shows any ads or requires any log in or registration.

I pretty much never use CNN, but I’m on the BBC’s news site every day. They do have login and registration boxes at the top of the home page, but I don’t recall running into any issues with having content locked to me on BBC because I’m not paying.

FWIW, it sounds like @Cartooniverse is using a mobile device to read news, yes? I have the BBC news app on my iPhone, and again, have not ever run into a “you need to pay to read” issue with it.

It’s impossible to read some of these sites with their ads. I don’t bother with them.

Neither BBC or CNN requires account login or registration…you can do either/both but not required and Brave knocks out any ads.

Brave is also available for iOS tho not sure how to make default browser on my iPhone.

Without active intervention by your browser many sites are unusable due to encroaching ads.

Just installed Brave on my iPhone and dumped Safari - no more ads.

Or conversely, two income streams. “A paid subscription and advertising fees? You’re a genius, Smedley!”

Settings, Apps, Default Apps, Browser App.

Whenever my local station asks for donations they always emphasize that they’re a public service rather than a for profit enterprise, and therefore will never be paywalled.

Unless you’re desperately poor can you not pick up a newspaper?

They are pricier than they used to be, I don’t find it very prohibitive, tho’.

If you’re so breathless to hear the latest bullshit media is feeding us(and have been), you’ll have to pay.

I’m not even reading the front pages of the 3 papers I have subscriptions to. Just not worth it. After Nov. 2024, I figure if the worse happens I’ll hear about it soon enough. Don’t need it bombarding my brain and affecting my mental health. Over and over and over again. It’s sickening.
